One Word

A Cure to Writer's Block

Steven W. Easley
One word: that's what separates the writer from the blank page. When I started this essay that is what I was faced with. I had decided on one word which would transform the blank page into creative work. If what I needed was one word, why not try "One" as the first word. Since I needed one "word" to start writing, I next added the word; "word." The rest simply just flowed onto the page.

Like most writers, I find the biggest part of what we refer to as writers block is more than a fear of not being able to create anything worthy of our readers. The blank page, and more recently, the blank screen have daunted writers for years. I'm not the first person to have experienced writer's block, nor am I the first person to write about it.

There have been numerous books written on the subject, how to cope with it, how to understand it, and how to overcome writer's block. These are all repeated subjects. Each writer has their own way of dealing with writer's block.

To some writer's it can be a problem they have to spend a great deal of time trying to overcome. Some develop a routine or technique for confronting the challenges of writer's block. Some try to find a quiet place to write, while some prefer music playing, and there are some that go through a long drawn out process of the right flavor of coffee under a full moon, facing west. There is no set method for overcoming writer's block. No tried and true, guaranteed to work every time method to fix this problem.

The daily stress of day to day life such as bills, kids, pets, internet or should I wear this shirt or this shirt all work against the writer. Anything that works against you and prevents you from writing is a form of writer's block, and the biggest obstacle is the writer themselves. Don't tell everyone, but there are times when the last thing you want to do is sit down and face the blank page and write, ONE WORD.
