One Wrong Turn

Gretchen Lee Bourquin

One wrong turn
can set you way off schedule.

Ask the bus driver
who took an extra freeway loop,
and saw all the wrong buildings,
all the wrong cars until
he found his path
but not before he lost fares
that gave up, drove instead

Now he speeds,
drives frantic, tense
trying to make up for lost time
So I don't have to

But I don't care.

I want to move
at my regular pace.
Watch the blue morning sky dissolve
the moon
like an Alka Selzer tablet

It's not the first detour
nor the last
But when life pulls you
Off course
There's always a reason
to look around
