Having a strong online presence can lead to hundreds, thousands and even millions visitors. Out of this pool of visitors a certain percentage will be converted to paying customers. This percentage is called the "conversion rate" and is used to determine the effectiveness of your website (converting visitors to paying customers) versus the effectiveness of drawing in visitors (advertising).
Advertising Campaign + Strong Website = Paying Customer
The success of your advertising campaign relies on the consistency of your message as it relates to the businesses products/services. The more in tune your businesses offerings (i.e. products and website) are to the message you are providing to your customers (i.e. advertisements) the closer your visitors will be to purchasing your products. In other words, it is easier to convert these visitors into paying customers because they are already interested in your products/services.
Online Advertising Methods:
Pay-Per-Click: One of the most successful methods of advertising has been Google's Adsense which has earned Google 5.5 billion dollars (Walters, 2007). With this method advertisers have been able to post small advertisement campaigns on sites with similar genres of information. For example, an advertisement for business consulting would be placed on business websites which further draw in readers already interested in the topic.
Text Link Ads: Placed within the articles or in a separate location text link ads draw visitors to a business site by giving them a link to a new location that offers the service. These text links are hyperlinked to your site and not only increase visitors but also increase search engine rankings. Text link ads that are placed on appropriate sites can increase brand awareness by 27% if conducted by someone who understands marketing (Janisch, 2004).
Cell Phone Advertising: Cell phone advertising includes sending text messages to cell phone users by geographic location or interest. It is believed that cell phone advertising will grow from 33 million dollars in 2007 to 4 billion dollars by 2011 (Gibbs, 2008). The demand for this marketing type will grow as more and more people purchase cell phones with texting abilities.
Article Marketing: Businesses that compose informative and useful articles about their products or services can draw in more interested customers from article directories (and websites that use these articles) back to their page. Within each article is either a link or a tagline which hyperlinks back to the author's website. The more an article is used for content by other websites the more visitors a business receives.
Blog Posts: Blogs with related content are often willing to review and generate posts about your business for a nominal fee. The more blogs that post about your business the more links and customers your business will receive. In many cases the credibility of the blog writer helps generation additional visitors and potential customers.
Web Directories: Web directories act like phone books on the Internet. The more times your business is listed among the various directories the easier it is for potential customers to find your business. A simple search for a particular product typically brings up one of these listings and the hyperlink that directs visitors to the website.
Summary:
Marketing and advertising is about drawing visitors and converting those visitors to paying customers through consistent marketing messages. Online advertising is growing every year and businesses who engage in the online advertising world are likely to earn more profits then those who don't. Each type of online marketing methods has its own particular advantages and custom campaigns with these advantages in mind should be developed based upon the business needs.
