Online Article Writers Tips - Money as a Goal

Jaipi Sixbear

I know what you're thinking. Money doesn't work as a goal in an online writing career because you don't make any. There are days when I might agree with you. Then there are other days where my online article writing is quite profitable. It's also possible that using money as a writing goal may work for you. It never really has worked for me. I'm not my most prolific or my most profound when forced to write for financial reasons. My inspiration and motivation come from a different place.

I write because I love it. Money as a goal doesn't work for me because I'm not in it for the money. I will admit, the money is nice. It helps pay the bills. Some day it will do much more than that. I know, because the longer I write, the better the money gets. Partly that's because I don't spend my time worrying about money. That frees my mind to think about what I'm writing.

My writing goals are:

  • To help
  • To inspire
  • To express
  • To learn
  • To improve

When you make money your goal, your writing suffers. I've spent many days writing while others were talking about page views not being updated or payments being a day late. Since I write for the sheer joy of it, I don't worry as much as other people seem to. I just block out all the craziness and write. After, all, I do it because I love it. Why waste time worrying when I could be writing? I will be paid at the end of the month whether I waste a day complaining or not.

Money is inconsistent in online article writing. You never know what or when you'll be paid. You can't say, "I'll write seven articles today and tomorrow I'll have X amount of money". It just doesn't work that way. Sure, there are upfront payments on assigned articles. There are offers you accept on unsolicited work. Otherwise, it's up to you to make a profit on your articles. If money is your goal, it's going to be pretty hard to figure out how to meet an exact dollar amount.

I prefer to emulate the highly successful online article writers. They are in the business of making money, not dwelling on it. To what do they attribute their success? They concentrate on their writing. Oh sure, they drop in on an occasional chat or forum post. They have friends in the writing community. What they don't do is spend every writing day wasting time complaining about the money they make.

Money as a goal is stressful. The reason I left my old job was due to the same type of stress. I work for myself because I'm the best boss ever. I don't have to deal with the hassle of an employer breathing down my neck. When money is your writing goal, you slide right back into that boss-hating frame of mind. Honestly, we don't have to go there. We're freelance writers. If we don't like the pond we're in we can always swim elsewhere. Writing for a living is a beautiful thing. Why screw it up by making money your goal?

It must be wonderful not to have to worry about the money and just write what you want when you want how you want. Unfortunately, I'm not there yet, so I keep plugging away to pay the bills. I hope one day that I will be where you are. :)
