The online Conversion site will save you hours of time and maybe hook you to do some other fun conversions while you are there. The tag line for the site says: "Convert just about anything to anything else." They are not kidding. There are measurements here that stimulate the gray matter.
The site has common conversions such as measurements and weights. It has uncommon conversions such as clothing size conversion between countries.
The list on the front page is in alphabetical order for the categories of conversion. There are two links at the bottom for non-conversion information. The site is clean and easy to navigate.
For the writer who wants to convert type to ASCII, there is a converter under the Computer and Electronics section. The section labeled Fun Stuff includes a Pig Latin Converter. I am not sure if anyone under the age of 30 would know what I am talking about here, but, it definitely fits in that category. Have you ever heard of Haxor? Me either, but the converter for it is under fun stuff.
Some of the fun factoids found on this site are:
Ireland acres are 1:1.6 of American acres. Land is bigger by measure in Ireland.
Arms length is 2.296 587 926 5 feet! Keeping a person at arms length isn't very far at all!
1 block in the Midwest U.S. is only .8 of a block in the East U.S. The Midwest measures their blocks a little short.
There is a measurement called a bee space. 1 bee space is equal to 0.255 905 511 81 inch. According to http://www.main.org/cahbs/glossary.htm, it is "The preferred distance between frames in a hive. Approximately 3/8ths of an inch. If frames are too far apart, bees will build burr comb between the frames."
A size 14 woman's dress in the U.S. Is a size 16 in the UK and a size 44 in France. The French women can come to the United States and feel smaller. But, U.S. Women traveling to France end up with clothes that seem bigger! In fact, the US size chart is smaller than the size numbers for most of the world's countries. It appears that the U.S. clothing manufacturers make our sizes smaller to fool us into thinking we are smaller.
Half the fun of this site is discovering what you do not know and how it is converted. I hope many people find their way to this clever and interesting online conversion tool.
