Online Dating for Seniors

Jessica Mousseau
Many people mistakenly believe that online dating is only for young or middle-aged adults, and in order for seniors (in this case, seniors refers to people 50 years of age or older) to find someone through such a service they must first wade through all the 20, 30, and 40-year-old profiles on current dating sites. Unless that is the age group that a 50+ person is interested in, most seniors aren't going to waste their valuable time.

So, it may be a comfort to hear that there are online dating sites for seniors, where those people who fit the age range (which can vary, depending on a particular site) can post their profiles. Many seniors have found companions on these sites; whether it is just to have someone to enjoy a favorite activity with or for a more serious relationship.

Although the people on senior online dating sites are more mature (and not only in chronological age), this still does not mean that seniors who utilize online dating sites don't have to take the same precautions as those younger online daters do. The same rules hold true for seniors who arrange meetings through online dating sites, and a few of them are listed below.

Make your first meeting in a public place.

A senior's first reaction upon reading this rule may be to think that it is
slightly ridiculous, because getting physically assaulted by an older man is highly unlikely. What about getting to the meeting place? Many seniors can't move as fast, and therefore are sometimes considered easy targets for muggings, purse-snatchings, and other similar crimes. Meeting in a public place, preferably one that has dedicated parking (such as a deck or on-street spaces specifically marked for the establishment, or valet parking) can diminish the chance of this happening.

Take your own car, have someone drop you off and pick you up, or use public transportation.

By providing your own transportation, you will not have to depend on your "date" to get you back home. This can have many advantages, including not having to prolong a meeting that obviously did not go well, and-especially in the case of having someone drop you off and pick you up-having someone knowing where you are.

Let someone know where you will be.

You will have arranged a meeting site in advance (or you should have) when you are making your plans for meeting your online dating choice. Now, you need to let a family member or close friend know where you will be.

If you are over 50, and considering giving online dating a try, go ahead. You might meet someone with whom to spend the rest of your life with. Just remember to be careful.
