How to Make Your Online Dating Experience Safe and Fun

Lisa White ISSA & AFPA CPT
With the growth of internet usage there is no surprise that people have not only turned to web services for business opportunities but for online dating, also. Over the years there have been many sites that have opened their pages as adult dating sites and have further expanded the chance of people finding a partner. Due to the fast pace of our society this is a way for people to meet others from the safety of your own home. Though it's simple and convenient here are some online dating tips to keep in mind.

Check out the site thoroughly

There are dozens-upon-dozens of online dating sites and each one is similar but be sure to read the fine print before joining up. Many offer free online dating services while others may have additional fees. Though many of the sites are broken into general categories take advantage of a site tour if it's available. This will help to redefine the site in your mind and will allow you a better perspective of what you are signing up for. Not only will the categories be of interest to you but simple navigation is a plus. Being able to maneuver through out the site easily will enable you to decide what's important and what's not.

Post your profile

Though the choice is yours to post your profile on one site it may be in your best interest to post your profile on several sites. This will open up your chances of meeting a more likely candidate. Besides posting your profile on the site be honest and add candid photos of yourself.

Plan a meeting

Before taking the step to plan a meeting there are some other steps to take first. Start communcations with e-mail, instant messaging and ask for him/her to send a photo if there isn't one on the site already. If, for some reason, this candidate won't send you a photo then ask yourself if this person is truly interested or perhaps has something to hide. If the communication goes well up the ante with a phone call.

Be responsible about your own safety

Just as you are the master of your destiny; you should feel the same way about your safety. It's your responsibility to set up parameters of the meeting and to ensure your own safety. Start with planning your first meeting in a public location. Be sure all bases are covered such as where you are going, who you're going with, a phone number where you can be reached, approximate times when you are leaving and coming back and so on. Leave this information with someone you trust because you never know how things may go once you meet this person.

Be patient

Take online dating slowly just as you would in a regular relationship. Although you may be lucky to meet many great candidates that doesn't necessarily mean this person is the right one for you. Even if things don't work out in the long run you have at least made some friends in the process.
