Online Degrees: Are They Right for You?

Drew Graham
Studying online for a college degree is becoming more and more popular everyday. The internet has made distance learning accessible to more and more people, however learning online may not be for everybody. Not every student will have the dedication or motivation to succeed in an online program. However, there are many benefits of distance learning that make it an ideal choice for the properly motivated student.

The most obvious benefit of an online degree program is that you can to take classes from major universities and institutions across the country or even around the world. It is no longer necessary for you to live near a major university to reap the benefits of attending one. This provides great flexibility in the programs you can enrol in and the courses you can take.

Online learning is also much easier to fit into your schedule than a traditional university. In traditional on-campus programs, you have to be in class at set dates and times. Unfortunately most people, especially adult students, have very busy lives and have a hard time committing to a universities schedule. Distance learning schools have flexible schedules so that you can study at a time that is convenient for you.

There are however a few negatives to distance learning that you need to think about if you are considering enrolling in an online program. The flexibility that makes distance learning so appealing to many people comes with a price. Because distance learning revolves around your schedule, and because you don't actually sit in a classroom with a professor there is no one there to push you to do the work, you have to be able to motivate yourself.

The other major drawback to learning online is that you have limited interactions with teachers and other students. This has improved in recent years as new technology allows for video lectures and live chat sessions, however for most students that still doesn't replace live interaction. Unlike traditional schools there is virtually no social interaction between students, so if this important to you, you should think hard about whether distance learning is for you.

So is leaning online right for you? Only you know what's important for you in an educational experience. If you can motivate yourself to study and dedicate time for yourself without a strict schedule, there's a great chance you'll be able to succeed and thrive with a distance learning program.
