3 Major Benefits of Online Education

Whenever you log onto your computer, you may notice advertisements on your internet homepage promoting online education. Whether your homepage is Yahoo! with an ad that says "Why Online College is Rocking" or if you conduct a Google search you may find a link for the Online Education Database (www.oedb.org). At this site, you can also find the 2009 Online College Rankings. Apparently, ranking high on the list are Nova Southeastern University (http://www.nova.edu/), Regent University (http://www.regent.edu/), and Champlain College (http://www.champlain.edu/). Yet, when seeking to pursue an online education, also referred to as distance education, what are the benefits?

First, consider the positives of such an investment. This method of pursuing a degree, certificate, or professional growth courses is very convenient and can open you to a vast amount of educational opportunities that may not be provided at universities near your home. For example, you may have an interest in a business degree but there are no local programs. Why not extend your reach and explore what is offered from a distance? Several universities that range from a prominent status through local community colleges offer courses online.

Second, there are certain financial benefits that result from distance education. For example, there is no daily or weekly commute to the college campus. Depending on the type of degree you are pursuing, there may be a residency that occurs once per year. This is when you do go to the campus and stay for approximately a one-week period for interactions with your instructors and classmates as well as attend a portion of your coursework. This can be both a fun and productive period of interaction and learning. Yet, you are responsible to arrange and cover your travel expenses for the time period. Yet, balance this against gas prices for your commute, wear and tear on your vehicle, and packing a lunch or quick dinner to eat in class, it may very well balance out.

Third, is the benefit of time. You are able to work within the convenience of your own home. Distance education programs vary according to the online educational platform that is used. Yet, those that are more advanced have online classrooms where you can use your webcam to see your classmates and instructor. You can participate in discussion and really connect with one another. Therefore, if you are a learner who enjoys direct interaction, this is also available for you.

Overall, take some time to visit the websites of online universities, talk with people who have engaged in distance education, and determine if this is an investment that will help your career prosper.
