Part one is about the money, capitalize on what you know, and use what the degree work is offering to make additions to your income. That sounds simple, and to many it sounds, simply out of reach, but here are a few idea makers for that- what about helping those who need help? Not from a technical site set up to do that, as some are, those homework help sites are nice, but, this is more personal- consider your friends who are students? How much might they appreciate it if you were willing to help them with something that you picked up in one of your six week to eight week courses, which they will spend approximately three months doing. What about community centered service projects using the knowledge that you've gained? One of my friends is studying nursing, which he puts to use by volunteering to take blood pressures at the local Wal-Mart as part of the concerted effort of the class. He is taking some classes online, others, he is taking on campus because they don't offer them online, nonetheless, he is giving back, and that does work out to his advantage in that friends do appreciate it.
Part two of the three is, everything is always negotiable- don't buy every first course offered as being the only one. Don't buy all the usual stuff, there are other colleges, ask if they will take credits for a course they aren't offering, if you take that course from another college? Get it in writing, as my friend did, and then, get that credit for half the price? He was shocked, not only did they negotiate, but it is going to lop off a quarter of his time to the degree. That might not sound like a lot, but you'd be surprised what a quarter can do for your pocketbook when you don't have to pay it to the college which has allowed you to take another course somewhere else. Loyalty is lovely, but many courses offered online are part of your degree, but they can be had for less money and less time by using your ability to do research. Google is a lovely thing.
Part three is to realize the hardest lesson, learning takes time, and taking the time makes the difference, and; ask questions and demand accountability on the answers. These are the lessons that often get missed online. It is a fast paced learning experience, and often because of the chat based nature of much of the interface, questions don't get asked as they might were the class on campus. Taking the necessary time to ask the questions that you need answered; insist, on proper references to resolve the question from your instructor because this can be invaluable to you later on. Remember the class may not take a long time, but you can slow the pace down a bit by making sure you are getting the material that is being taught.
