Name Game
Keep a note pad handy in the early days and jot down your ideas. Think of a name that is easy to remember and invest in quality business cards and maybe a few kid-friendly stickers.
Master Your Domain
Buy the ".com" and other web addresses related to your name. You'll also want to reserve this name on Twitter, Facebook and a blog platform. Don't start building content yet-you've still got more work to do.
Logos Matter
Before you start messaging, you'll need to get a good logo that sends a visual message about the business. If you are marketing to moms you'll want to include a tip-off that this is a mom-oriented business. That being said, moms are more tech savvy and sexier than ever before. Think modern when you imagine your audience.
Spreading the Word
Contests and sampling opportunities are a great way to build initial buzz about your brand. Contact influential bloggers (look for the "about" page) by sending them an email proposal. Don't call them unless specifically asked. Build a budget in for marketing expenses to run these contests and ship out samples. It is reasonable to get feedback from a sample, but don't expect to write a review and have it pasted on the site. Any blogger worth her salt, will want to craft her own review. So be prepared for pluses and minuses. Use this valuable feedback to improve your offerings.
Build a Community
There should be a spot on your site for moms to give feedback. This could be a place for them to post pictures of them using your brand or for them to offer criticism. Moms love knowing their voices are being heard.
It's not enough to expect moms to come to you. Your brand also has to come to them. Reach out to blogs that have content that impacts your brand. For instance, if you make music for preschoolers, make sure you are following the top mommy blogs that talk about SAHM entertainment. Leave comments and interact-but don't just talk about your product. Be generous with advice and praise. It will pay off.
