Plagiarism is a form of literary theft. The act of plagiarism is a crime punishable under copyright laws. Online tools are available to writers to avoid the affects of plagiarism.

Article Checker

Article Checker is a free Internet-based plagiarism tool. Users insert text or a URL into the search fields. The information submitted compares to results found on Yahoo and Google.

Copyscape

Copyscape is an online plagiarism checker. The services offered include free plagiarism checker as well as a premium service. The premium service includes a copy and paste feature, private indexes, batch services and application programming interface (API). API integrates a private index into the script of a server. Another service offered by Copyscape is Copysentry, which scans the Internet for duplicate copy of published work. Copyscape offers a free warning banner to post on websites. The premium service costs five cents per search, as of March 2011.

DOC Cop

DOC Cop is an Internet-based search that checks for collusion, cryptomnesia and plagiarism. The free service produces a result of matching documents. The program checks documents, PDF files, frequently asked questions, detailed reports and HTML reports. Doc Cop allows users to check up to 1,000 words at a time with multiple string lengths. When the search is completed, Doc Cop does not retain rights.

Plagiarism Detect

Plagiarism Detect is an Internet-based plagiarism checker. The service consists of a free demonstration mode as well as an accurate account paid membership. The demonstration mode allows users to check up to 100 words for duplicates and basic Internet similarities. The accurate account allows an unlimited amount of searches, advanced multi-layered searches, upload file options and searches sent to personal emails. Plagiarism Detect ensures 99.9 percent accuracy with plagiarism detection.

Internet Search

Use an Internet search engine such as Yahoo! to check for plagiarism. Type the first few sentences of a document into a search engine. The results generated show Internet documents that have the same content as an original. Accuracy of results depends upon the indexing of the original document.
