Parenting Support Links for Asperger Syndrome Families and Care Givers

No child arrives with an instruction manual. Parenting children with special needs can be an insurmountable challenge. Turning to resources combining experts with parents who have been through similar situations is comforting and empowering.

Asperger Syndrome is just one example of the Autism Spectrum disorders needing many different opportunities for resource assistance online and in-person around the world. Some are parent chat rooms. Others are websites offering professional information and legal rights advice, while still others have summer camps for Asperger Syndrome individuals and high functioning Autistics.

AutismSpeaks.org

AutismSpeaks is probably the most comprehensive, and popular resource for Autism Spectrum family support online, including Asperger Syndrome and Autism. AutismSpeaks has a huge voice in the legislature as a guard and protector of rights for those who cannot speak for themselves in our U.S. legislature.

The AutismSpeaks project of the month for August 2009 is insurance reform. The website posts a reminder that insurance does not reimburse much of Autism/Asperger Syndrome related therapy, which can cost up to $50,000 per year.

ASPEN: Asperger Syndrome Education Network

ASPEN is a non-profit organization based in New Jersey, with 15 chapters in North America, providing education, advocacy, and support to those with Asperger Syndrome and their families. The Fall 2009, Spring 2010, and Fall 2010 conferences are organizing and accepting registrations now.

WrongPlanet.net

WrongPlanet.net is a community online where individuals with Asperger Syndrome, or family and friends, can share. WrongPlanet offers blogs, message board forums, chat rooms, and specific articles related to living with Asperger Syndrome.

AutismWeb.com

AutismWeb is all parents of Autistic, Asperger, and Autism Spectrum children who support each other through various ways with this online site. There is a message forum, and diet and supplements page, teaching materials page, and resources page, and much more on this website.

Asperger Syndrome List Subscriber Support

The Asperger Syndrome List Subscriber Support is a private list of support to give members opportunity to share experiences, encourage, and to vent difficulties, open only to parents, and care givers of individuals with Asperger Syndrome or high-functioning Autism, or adult individuals with these conditions.

Asperger Syndrome Support Network

Established in 1991, the ASSN started with a group of parents of children with Asperger Syndrome in Australia. Regular seminars are offered with the most recent having been the topic of Sensory Issues, June 2009. The topic for August 2009 is Girls and Asperger Syndrome. Registration and information is updated regularly on the website.

Nell Frances - AspergerChild.com

Nell Frances is the author of the Asperger's children's book series, Ben and His Helmet, teaching children better behaviors. Her website offers the books for sale, plus general support for parents, families, and professionals in helping children of Asperger's with their self-development and character.

The Source

The Source is the website of MAAP Services for Autism and Asperger Syndrome, a non-profit organization, offering information and advice to families of individuals with advanced forms of these disorders. Legal rights and publications are included in the website information.

AutismSpeaks.org is a most well-known online resource for individuals with Asperger Syndrome, Autism, and Autism Spectrum Disorders - as well as their parents, extended family, friends, and care givers from childhood through adult life.
