You're moving to State College, Pennsylvania and don't want to get stuck living six people to a bedroom in the heart of the downtown Penn State student areas. (Vomit, beer, and urine in the elevator-you're totally above all of that now!) Here are some resources that you can check out from the privacy of your computer to help ensure that you don't end up hating your new digs.

StateCollege.com Classified ads

Your first stop in your apartment search should be this website, State College's most popular local site. The site has an entire section where townfolk can advertise their wares, most importantly in your case, apartments. I know many people (myself included) who have found some real rental gems by browsing these ads. This site is also great for posting sublets, so even if the property you're lusting after is fully rented, you might be able to find a sublet. The site is a great central location for renters, landlords, subletters and other in-need-of-housing folk to gather and find what they are looking for.

Craig's List, Penn State Edition

Even though Craig's List is a fairly recent development in State College, its popularity has risen exponentially. Craig's List includes nine categories of listings under their "housing" section, including "housing wanted" and "housing swap." (Just in case you ever want to switch lives with anyone ala Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet in "The Holiday" or escape from one of your many adoring fans, right?) Under the "apartments/housing" section, you will find listings similar to those of StateCollege.com. Overall, this site is a great resource with perhaps better organization and categorization than StateCollege.com.

Penn State Off-Campus Living

Although mostly used by undergrads and grad students, the Penn State Off-Campus Living website offers many resources valuable to any renter in State College. In addition to the usual rental listings, roommate search posts, and sublet offers, this site lists Virtual Resources, legal information about rentals, and even lists warning signs for possible rental scams in the area. The list of local realtors proves especially helpful, and is updated more often than versions of the same on other local sites.

Centre-Daily Times Online Classified Ads

Centre County's mainstream newspaper offers an interactive classified section to their website. Not only can you look at an online version of the day's print classified ads section, but they also offer resources through apartments.com. You can search the Centre-Daily Times classified ads for rentals and apartments.com listings simultaneously, which is a big timesaver.
