I started mediating about four years ago and at the time I had trouble with insomnia. I was pretty restless when I first started meditating - my mind kept wandering to everything else I needed to get done that day. But I kept with it and soon I found when I sat down to meditate, my mind would relax, or quiet down a bit and I was able to enjoy this time. Now I meditate each night and couldn't imagine going a day without this time.
There are some great online resources to get you started in a practice of meditation. Here are several that explain meditation well and some that lead you through meditations at their website. Once you start meditating, you soon realize that there are many different types of meditation - and one type may appeal to you more than another. You may wish to use a mantra (repeated word). Or you may wish to focus on your breath as you meditate. Or you may wish to do a silent meditation. Or a guided meditation may appeal to you. Or if you are feeling more active, a walking meditation may appeal to you some days. No matter your mood, personality or tastes - there is a type of meditation that will please you.
