Online Scamming

Waste of Time and Money

Marisa Goins
How do you notice a scam? Do you try to find out as much about that person as you can before you make a deal, or purchase? Believe it or not, not too many people do. People of all ages have been falling for scams. Even I have been scammed. Recently my fiancee and I found a vehicle off of Craigslist. The woman who was selling the car listed her e-mail, so we got a hold of her and to our belief she wrote us back within minutes! Mind you, we are young. We assumed it was a true offer, and she told us that there would be a third party involved through eBay. We fell for it. We sent the money via Western Union (what a mistake) and never even got a reply back from the seller. There we were, left in the dust. We heard so many stories about these scammers on Craigslist, but in order to believe it, we had to do it. We were apart of their trap. I did everything I possibly could, and I just felt so guilty for telling my fiancee that everything would go through. Three thousand dollars is a lot of money to lose, and it's what we received back in taxes. There's so much you can do with three thousand dollars, yet we had lost it all and our hope. I have made complaints and sent these e-mails out to agencies to see if someone could help us.

I keep hoping we can somehow get or money back, but maybe we will just have to learn this lesson the hard way. NEVER, NEVER do any kind of business on the Internet or phone. Always make sure it is in person, and there's some kind of contract involved. It's the safest way to play it, and in the end it will save you your money. Always do research about buying from any companies and make sure you know it's a valid offer. I was a little late on my research, and I invested so much into believing this was not a scam, that it couldn't happen to me. It did, and it can happen to anyone.
