Online Shopping Makes Shipping Gifts a Snap

Drew Taylor
Sending gifts to friends and family who live in other parts of the country does not require a trip to the post office. You can easily send more than an impersonal gift card by shopping online. Ordering gifts online is an easy way to choose personal gifts without worrying about how to pack them.

Use the shopping tips and let the retailer pack and send your gift directly to the recipient.

Use One Retailer for Each Destination
Stores frequently offer coupons, reward dollars or free shipping for customers who make a minimum purchase. Whenever possible, qualify for these discounts by shopping at one retailer for each destination.

Look for Shipping Bargains
Shop around because shipping and handling charges vary significantly from store to store. The charges often start at approximately $7, but some retailers, including pet store DrsFosterSmith.com, charge a flat fee for most orders. Walmart.com currently ships many items for 97 cents each. This makes it easy to comparison shop and is great when purchasing only a few items online.

Gift Wrap Options
If gift wrap is a must-have, many online retailers will wrap purchases for a small fee, typically around $4 each. Read the description carefully because some stores offer a DIY gift wrap kit.

Include a Card
Some stores offer a complimentary card printed with your personal message. Oftentimes, shoppers can choose to upgrade to a nicer card for an additional fee, typically around $3.

Check the Return Policy
Although it can be time-consuming, costly and waste natural resources, some retailers, such as Victoria's Secret, require customers to return online purchases via mail. Other stores, such as Bath and Body Works, have a very generous return policy allowing shoppers to easily exchange gifts in store without a receipt. Consider the return policy when choosing where to shop.

It is also helpful to check if there is a store location in the gift recipient's area. This makes it easy for her to simply pop in and exchange gifts, if necessary.

Include a Gift Receipt
During the checkout process, there is usually an option to include a gift receipt. This makes refunds go smoothly and ensures that the store credits the proper amount instead of the most recent sale price.

Order Before the Cutoff Date
Check the FAQs or shipping information to make sure you place your order in time for holiday delivery. If you wait too long, you will have to pay for expedited delivery or take a chance your gifts will arrive after the special occasion.

Great suggestions for those who need to ship packages to do the shopping online. Postage is so expensive these days. Just sending out Christmas cards cost more than the purchase of the cards! I bought the cards for 9 dollars and it cost over $20 in stamps! Imagine that, cheers ;)

I do most of my shopping online. I live over an hour's drive away from any major shopping areas, so it saves a huge amount of time and gas.
