Online Tax Revolt Gaining in Popularity

March to Washingon April 15th... Without Ever Leaving Your Home

David Van Edema
On September 12th, 2009, hundreds of thousands of people gathered in Washington D.C. to protest the massive increase of government, taxes and spending.

On April 15, 2010, rather than celebrating "Tax Day" by running to the post office, over 110,000 (and counting) people are heading to our nation's capital instead, and they're doing it without even setting foot on their driveways.

A new website called "Online Tax Revolt" has recently opened up and has been receiving thousands of applicants consisting of angry, frustrated Americans who are fed up with the government's tax increases and wasteful spending. Here is how it works:

The visitor signs up by first entering his/her name, email address and zip code. Next, the visitor then chooses a simple online avatar, which has 9 different looks for both males and females. The looks include a camouflaged outfit to represent veterans or active duty military, Uncle Sam (Betsy Ross for females), as well as representatives of the medical profession, the Tea Party Movement, working families, and even President Ronald Reagan. Being a military veteran, I selected the camouflaged outfit.

Finally, the visitor selects a team that he wants to join for the march. Though one can select to march alone (under the "An Army of One" selection), there are 13 different teams, so it's possible that you will have heard of at least one of them. Each team has a brief description of it beneath the selection. It's likely one will find a team that best suits them, though all of the teams have common goals... lower taxes, smaller government, less government spending and believing in our Constitution.

Personally, I selected to become a member of "Neal Boortz's FairTax Brigade" team, since it was on his show that I first heard about the event. That and I am admittedly a fan of his radio program and his books on the FairTax ("The FairTax", "FairTax: The Truth").

Once the "submit" button is clicked, the visitor is then taken to a satellite map, which shows their avatar in their home city, with their name and team affiliation above it. Other avatars can also be seen along with yours. Mine, by the way, is "David" in Orange City, Florida.

From what I understand, the avatar will travel from its home city and make its way to Washington D.C. by April 15th; just in time for the protest. You can look up your avatar's progress at any time by selecting the "View the March" option at the top of the webpage, then entering your email address.

I'll make no claims that this movement will rock the White House and the Capitol, but if you were unable to attend the September 12th event due to time constraints or lack of funds, at least you can be there in spirit... at least until the next "March on Washington" event, that is currently planned for September 12th, 2010.

By the way, in the time that it took me to write this article, another thousand people have signed on to the revolt. The movement seems to be catching on.

Online tax revolt? Oh, but we're just a bunch of cranky old Republicans.

I'll probably join, but I'm hoping there are some local events on this day.
