All debate aside, much has been made of the detriments of video games in general to both children and adults alike. Today's compulsive gamer has replaced the '60s hippie or the '70s stoner dude as the stereotypical slacker in our society. Frequent complaints are heard from parents, even teachers, about kids devoting more time to their video games, neglecting their schoolwork and other everyday duties. Even the casual gamer can not deny the siren-like call of an online or console game. There's always another level to reach, or puzzle to solve. But when all is said and done, losing yourself in a video game is a welcome distraction, merely the 21st century version of reading a good book.
There are numerous merits to both online and console games. Both score high as to convenience and accessibility, but a major difference comes on the economic front. Game consoles such as Xbox, Wii and PlayStation generally cost somewhere between $200-400 each. Often with a purchase, you will receive a bundle of games free. But beyond that you may find it necessary to acquire various accessories, such as joysticks, wireless controllers and many more. And the games themselves vary widely in cost. On the plus side, you can hook up the consoles to the Internet to enable you to play in multiplayer mode with gamers offsite. Still, be ready for a hefty investment long term.
Online games on the other hand are frequently less expensive. Numerous sites, such as Pogo, exist that offer free downloadable games for all ages, and still more sites provide interactive role-playing for a nominal fee each month. Games such as RuneScape, EverQuest, World of Warcraft have commanded huge followings over the years, becoming the modern variant on Dungeons & Dragons.
A major advantage to console games is that you can involve your friends and family. There are many games, whether sports-based, shoot-em-up or arcade, that will allow you to have multiple players right there in your living room. This can be particularly fun for a guy's (or girl's) night out, where you simply hook up extra controllers and the merriment ensues. Plus, if you have a big screen TV, so much the better. And let's not discount how console games can improve motor skills. Flight simulator games are even being used by the Air Force as training tools for pilots.
Online gaming proponents will always hype its interactive and intellectual benefits. Many experts claim that online games will improve a person's cognitive abilities. Often times, instead of just blasting their way out of a situation, an online gamer has to use deductive reasoning to extricate themselves from a sticky wicket. Puzzles, locked doors, bottomless pits and the like are just some of the obstacles that require sharp thinking. There'll be times where the bad guys show up and mayhem ensues, but not as frequently as with console games.
Quality time can be enjoyed by parents and their children when exploring cyberspace for online games. Just like sitting down for a shared favorite movie or TV show, Internet games can provide hours of entertainment and expose a child to an exciting world of opportunities.
As with any form of entertainment, you should always be aware of the risk of overdoing it. Moderation is important, whether you're using online or console games. But, as you can see, both have a unique set of pros and cons that must be weighed carefully. It's likely the debate will go for some time.
