Limitations

Though Ooma offers enhanced 911 emergency calling as a standard feature, you won't have telephone service if your electricity goes out. Ooma's answer to this problem is to retain your landline phone service or use a cell phone. Thus, like all VOIP phone services, Ooma is not a replacement for your current phone service.

The Bottom Line

At $249.99 for the Ooma Hub, Ooma's up-front cost is higher than MagicJack, Vonage, and Skype. In theory, the higher front-end pricing makes Oooma worthwhile because no monthly fees are charged. In order to break even, you need to own the Ooma Hub for 12 years as compared with MagicJack ($1.66 per month/$19.95 annually) or 10 months as compared with Vonage ($24.99 per month/$299.88 annually).
