Despina Bakis, a native Grecian, has owned and operated OPA! Greek Cuisine here in Yuba City for fifteen months. "I have always wanted my own restaurant", said Despina Bakis who came from Greece to Yuba City more than twenty years ago. If you're new to Greek Cuisine don't be afraid to try it. Despina knows just what to recommend.
Try the Spanakopita: Filo dough pastry stuffed with spinach, feta, and freshly grated parmesan cheese & baked to perfection. There are entrees of Souvlaki (Kabobs) marinated with Despina's secret marinade including a unique host of mild Greek spices, charbroiled to order and served on a bed of Pilafi rice.
For the best authentic dishes try Keftethes: Four Greek style meatballs prepared with extra lean ground beef, mildly spiced and roasted. Pastitsio: Traditional pasta made with a ground meat sauce. A Greek version of Lasagna, it's just the Greek's were the first to make it. Moussaka: A long time Greek favorite, roasted eggplant and potatoes married with Despina's meat sauce.
For a more adventurous and acquired taste try the Dolmathes: Six grape leaves stuffed with rice and spices, served with Tzatziki: Grated cucumbers and fresh chopped garlic with Greek spices.
And don't forget to try the Greek coffee, it goes best with one of the desserts because it is so strong. The heavy grounds, or Katakathi, which is left at the bottom of the cup is not meant to be drunk but is left in the cup.
All desserts are prepared daily on the premises following the great recipes of the ancient Greek Emperor's kitchen. Traditional Baklava: Filo dough pastry layered with walnuts. Amigthalopita: Freshly baked almond cake drenched in honey. Loukoumathes: Light fluffy batter fried and drizzled with honey and walnuts (it tastes better when you eat it like finger food, using your hands instead of utensils). Ravani is only made occasionally and is a light moist cake with a vanilla custard topping sprinkled with walnuts. There are also Greek cookies, Koulourakia, to satisfy your sweet tooth.
This unique Greek Cuisine has catering for those special occasions or just for Take-Out. You don't have to go far to find good food served with friendly and warm service. OPA! Is a piece of Greece here in Yuba City.
