Open Relationships

Do Open Relationships Help a Marriage to Thrive?

Sondra C
A relationship can between a woman and a man; two women or two men. A healthy relationship is when each give freely to each other without counting how much each gives or if one takes more than they give. An open relationship might be what some think is having it all in a marriage.

A relationship can become a friendship between two of the same or opposite sex. There could be a closeness without intimacy or them planning to marry. This type of friendship-relationship can occur between two of the same or opposite sex and might end when one or the other find true love and plan on marriage. Where does an open relationship fit in?

Chemistry between two people can be the fuel that starts a relationship. At times it ends in marriage. Physical intimacy too soon upon meeting could weaken the friendship and tear two people apart. Perhaps an open relationship might be the answer to this problem.

Open Relationships

Open relationships might be the choice of many single or married couples. This type of a relationship allows each to date others while living with each other. This marital decision seems easy to enjoy but is not always best way for married couples to live. On the contrary, it could easily tear a marriage apart when one falls madly in love with their 'date relationship' instead of their mate. Divorce can be the next step in open relationships.

Sex with another person and trading experiences might make some great talk over coffee. However, in time, this can become boring, less exciting and a strain on the marriage.

The Pitfalls of an Open Relationship

There are many things to think about before giving thought to entering into an open relationship in your marriage. Why do you want it? Is your marriage on the rocks and you feel that this would bring you two together again. Are you getting bored with the same type of conversation or one position sex? Are either of you too tired to please each other in the evenings or on weekends? Is the marriage falling apart? What if there are children involved, what becomes of them? Do you file for divorce?

Keep a Relationship Fresh and Exciting

A solid marriage should not need another person in the guise of an open relationship to keep it alive. Keep your marriage exciting by giving unexpected gifts, sending flowers, arranging outings, or long overdue vacations.

Do not allow a relationship to get boring. Recall how you two got together in the first place and reenact it. Were you dressed a little outlandish? Did you laugh at his jokes? Did he think you looked like an angel in that sexy to go-to-bed attire? Do you now wear flannel pajamas? Did you voice appreciation at the repairs he made around the house? Did you kiss each other, and say "I love you" and mean it before going to to sleep at night or do you merely 'roll over'', mutter something and then start snoring?

It is easier to start the fire burning again in a marriage that has gone sour, than to go through a divorce and figure out child visitations and to decide on who gets what? Do you need the trials and tribulations that can occur by having an open relationship?

Keep in mind, that any relationship is doomed unless it is continuously nurtured. Even a fire dies when the fuel that started the fire runs out.

While the thought of an Open Relationship might sound exciting at the start, after a while it can be the trigger to end a marriage instead of adding fuel to the marriage. Love knows no bounds.

This is not acceptable behavior in my opinion. And BTY, Same sex marriages, open or not, is an abomination in the sight of the Lord.

Sterling advice Sondra, as always. Your wisdom is to our benefit. I think like anything, it takes work and the opposite of love is not hate...it is apathy, or indifference. Stir the coals, and re-ignite the fire. Good point my friend.
