Opening a Subway Franchise

Getting a Piece of the Action with the Most Successful Submarine Sandwich Chain

Seth Mullins
Subway is the world's largest submarine sandwich franchise, with more than 27,000 locations in 86 countries. For many years now, it has maintained its status as a leader in the quick service restaurant industry. The basic menu remains the same wherever Subway restaurants are located. One of the basic tenets of fast food is consistency: owners want their customers to feel like they're entering a familiar environment, whether it's within the United States, New Zealand, or Jamaica.

Subway has been helping entrepreneurs to build their own independently owned and operated restaurants for forty years. Because of rampant interest in franchises, a number of training facilities have been opened throughout all those years. Subway's devotion to customer satisfaction and continued expansion has earned it the distinction of being voted "#1 Franchise for 2007" in Entrepreneur magazine. Over 70% of new franchises are puchased by established franchisees.

Part of the success of the Subway chain is attributable to its menu choices, which serve as a healthier alternative to those offered by competing fast food chains like McDonalds. Their training system accomplishes a number of things for prospective owners: teaching menu formulas, assisting with leasing, and guiding one through the design of a store and the ordering of equipment. A full brochure is available for ordering from the Subway headquarters website, or else it can be requested through ground mail at this address: Subway Franchise Headquarters/ 352 Bic Drive/ Milford, CT. 06461-3059. Area seminars also afford one the opportunity to meet local Subway representatives, and one can register for these seminars online as well.

For those interested, Subway has a preliminary application for requesting additional information about owning a franchise. This application includes such basic fields as domicile, date of birth, and tax I.D./social security number; more specific questions concern one's educational background, income (from all sources) assets, references, and whether one has even been convicted of a felony or been associated (directly or indirectly) with terrorist activities.

Completion of this form does not, however, guarantee one the granting of a franchise. This remains at the discretion of the Franchisor (Doctor's Associates, Inc.)
