The protestors' intention is to use up enough data to bring AT&T down to their cyber knees. Already condemned by AT&T and the FCC and the peeps behind Operation Chokehold are saying it was just a joke. Whether Operation Chokehold is a joke is yet to be seen. Clearly authorities did not find the threats funny and many users might be impacted by this cyber-protest.
I can't help but feel alarmed about all the social network and mobile problems lately. From Twitter Hacked by Iranian Cyber Army to the T-Mobile Outage to the RIM Outage Resolved For Verizon Blackberry, there's been a lot going on in the virtual world. It doesn't seem people can safely hide behind their computers and cell phones anymore. With services being interrupted and going down, where will people go?
Often when I discuss Internet and cell phone safety, I compare the situation to a highway. Would you walk along a busy highway unprotected and alone? Just as we rely on safe, operational vehicles, we have to ensure conscientious behavior and security programs on our devices to stay protected online. Even when you take every precaution, bad things can happen - just like traveling along a major highway.
Also, these outages and social media interruptions remind us how dependent we are on these electronic devices. While we need to stay connected, what price are we paying for it? People are using their Blackberry devices often enough to irritate others and be referred to as "Crackberry" users. Is the virtual world becoming addictive and vindictive?
Was your AT&T service impacted by Operation Chokehold? What do you think of the recent activity on cell phones and social media?
Meanwhile, here is a link to watch the talented and beautiful Mary J. Blige in an AT&T commercial video, compliments of YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Usw4c7bdqcA
