Operation Kid-to-Kid currently has a program where children give "Comfort Critters" to other children recovering from natural disasters. These are little soft fabric turtles that have a pocket with an encouraging note. The "Crocodile Dock" program as it is called has served children affected by the Iowa floods, the wildfires of California, the tornadoes in Oklahoma and the children affected by Hurricane Katrina.
Though Katrina hit almost four years ago, the children of New Orleans continue to be affected. Eighty percent of the city experienced flooding. At this time, the city and its families are not fully recovered. Thanks to Operation Kid-to-Kid, children all over North America are bringing a little hope by giving these Comfort Critters to the children of New Orleans.
Operation Kid-to-Kid also organizes mission trips for families and their children. This year they are conducting a mission trip to Rome. Children will have an opportunity to reach out to other children by distributing the monthly publication My Monthly Bible Reader. This comic style book contains messages of Christian principles which help strengthen the faith of children. In some areas, Operation Kid-to-Kid passes them out openly. In other places in the world, this is done quietly.
In the ten years since its inception, Operation Kid-to-Kid has become one of the largest forces in getting children involved in volunteerism. Through them, children have supplied other children with items such as supplies for school and hygiene. They have given Bibles as well as clothing. Other past service projects includes sending soccer balls to children whose families cannot afford them and giving "prayer bears" to children.
Operation Kid-to-Kid lets young children experience the joy and blessing of giving to others. It is a hands-on learning experience that teaches children compassion, empathy and service. Their lives as well as the lives of the thousands of children they serve are inevitably changed.
