How To Cope With ODD?
A child who suffers Oppositional defiant disorder has a greater challenge in gaining knowledge because their attention is distracted by the defiance of authority especially in school which interferes with acquiring skills to do things independently. Another theory of the causes of ODD is the subdued disciplinary methods used by experts and parents alike. The use of unresponsive disciplinary actions strengthens oppositional behavior in a child. Parents should undergo Parent management training which focuses on teaching parents of children with ODD more effective, specific techniques for handling the child's opposition and defiance.
Who Are Mostly Affected?
Most people with Oppositional defiant disorder are kids and teenagers and include 23% of school-aged children. Symptoms of children with the disorder are seen as early as the age of 2 or 3yrs, and throughout the pubescent years. Most children tend to be disagreeable, disobey parents, or disregard authority when they are tired, famished, or stressed. Children with ODD have the same behavior even if they are not tired, hungry or stressed which gets in the way of learning and a child's ability to form relationships with others. Some common symptoms include frequent temper tantrums, habitual arguing for no particular reason, and non-compliance to logical orders and even do things in contrast of what they are told to do. They try to be annoying to people around them.
Treatment Methods And Alternatives
Children with the disorder often hold other people responsible for their actions and will most likely get into discussions very easily. They have anxiety issues, use impolite language, pick up on the awful qualities of others and are deliberately very rude. These are some symptoms of children with Oppositional defiant disorder and when you notice these signs & symptoms in your own children, or think that your child has this state, get a schedule with a child psychiatrist for them to be able to get the proper Oppositional defiant disorder treatment before it gets worse. Proper Oppositional defiant disorder treatment and therapy sometimes include the use of certain drugs that will be able to affect the child's behavior within a week's time, and for even more severe cases, it may also take a few months. Stimulant medication is indicated only when oppositional defiant disorder coexists with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. No study at present is available on the utilization of other psychiatric drugs in the handling of oppositional defiant disorder.
