Oprah Will Start Her Own Cable Channel

In 2011 the larger than life billionaire and perhaps the most liked personality in the world (at least I think she should be), Oprah Winfrey, will end her daytime talk show, The Oprah Winfrey Show. Oprah will be starting a cable channel of her own. Wow! Can you imagine owing a cable channel? Sure I know Ted Turner owns lots of things but Oprah is a good person. I am happy for her and wish her luck.

Oprah Gail Winfrey, 55, has done it all. She is an actress, television producer, literary critic and magazine publisher. Of course we all know her because of her television show which I tape daily. It has been the highest rated program of its kind - ever and has won many awards.

She has been ranked the richest African American of the 20th century, the most philanthropic African American of all time, and was once the world's only black billionaire. She is also, according to some, the most influential woman in the world. Throwing her hat behind Barack Obama was a real coup for those of us who wanted him to become President of the U.S.

Oprah's story may be well known to many but if not a brief summary. She was born into poverty to a teenage single mother, was raped at nine years of age, and became pregnant at 14. Her baby died as an infant. She went to live with a barber whom she calls her father. She got hired in the radio field while still in high school and began began co-anchoring the local evening news in Tennessee. She was 19.

Her talent got her a job in day time television and eventually she started her own production company, HARPO, which is OPRAH spelled backward. The rest is history.

Oprah will make the announcement tomorrow, Friday, on her show. "The sun will set on the Oprah show as its 25th season draws to a close on September 9, 2011," WABC said. The Oprah Winfrey Show remains the most successful talk show in syndication. About seven million people watch her show a day.

The name of her cable station is OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network.

As I understand it, she is not 'leaving' the airwaves, but is simply (and, no doubt, profitably) moving to a different (cable) network. We will not have heard or seen the last of Ms. Harpo-spelled-backwards for a long time yet!

and Rescue Me is going off the air in 2011. I think it will be a popular year because of 9/11.

I guess she has put in a lot of years and deserves to retire or move on, but I will miss the show.

My hubby will retire in 2011 also should I be worried?
