Oprah and Dr. Phil Warn Rihanna that Abuse Will Happen Again

Oprah: "He Will Hit You Again"

The alleged Chris Brown beating of pop star Rihanna has had everyone from mental health professionals to stay-at-home bloggers weighing in with their opinions, comments, and advice on the matter. But none of them will get quite the attention that Oprah Winfrey will demand when she talks about the subject on Thursday's (March 12) "Oprah Winfrey Show."

On Friday's show (March 6), Oprah, during a live discussion, said, "Chris Brown and Rihanna, if I was your friend, I would call you up and I would say, 'Give it some time, get yourself some counseling, take care of yourself.' Heal yourself first.''

But Oprah was most pointed with her next remarks: "And also, love doesn't hurt. I've been saying this to women for years: 'If a man hits you once, he will hit you again.'" Leaning into the camera, she repeated, "He will hit you again."

Winfrey said she had discussed the matter with her producers, broaching the subject of doing an entire episode dedicated to domestic violence. Oprah has been very open about abusive relationships she has had in the past.

But it is the escalation of violence in domestic abuse situations that has many worried. Dr. Phil McGraw told the ladies on "The View" that people in situations such as Rihanna's need to "get away and protect yourself." He added, "People get killed all the time by accident. You don't mean to really kill the person..."

Dr. Phil said that Rihanna's situation has become a "teachable moment" for mothers and daughters everywhere. He said that Rihanna has made the decision to go back to Chris Brown, a man who has abused her, and that is her decision. But mothers should tell their daughters that it was a "foolhardy decision. Don't you do it. She's wrong."

Data indicates that 44% of women murdered by an intimate partner, according to the Centers for Disease Control, visited the emergency room for treatment within two years of their death -- with 93% of those killed having had at least one injury visit.

TMZ reported that Rihanna told the police that the latest attack was one of a series of increasingly violent attacks against her.

Oprah Winfrey's warning to Rihanna came just a day after Chris Brown appeared in Los Angeles court and entered no plea to two felony counts being leveled against him over the February 8 incident. Brown is accused of making threats and assault, charges which could potentially put him behind bars for nearly five years.

With Chris Brown and Rihanna renewing their relationship, the 21-year-old pop star seemed to let down many who thought that she would become a voice against domestic violence and abuse and perhaps be a role model for younger women who are in abusive relationships with their intimate partners.

Oprah offered statistics that one in four women were battered. She said that the statistic holds true for teenaged females as well.

On Thursday, with a little help from Oprah, addressing the topic of domestic violence will become a national "teachable moment."

What a shame this mediocre talent has shot to worldwide fame because of her looks. Admit it, if Rihanna didn't have model looks she'd be a nobody and wouldn't have so many fans. I'm sick and tired of these less than spectacular singers singing songs that OTHER PEOPLE WRITE FOR THEM, and then becoming super famous and rich off their looks. If Rihanna looked like the housewife next door and wore a size 14, forget it, you dumb teens couldn't care less about her. Rihanna may have beauty on the outside, but no brains, she was stupid enough to hook up with Chris Brown, who has serious mental issues, and she didn't see that from the start? Dumb Rihanna. Dumber and dumber Rihanna for getting back together with idiot Chris Brown. Why do all these stupid teens worship these losers? Shame on my niece for worshipping Chris Brown. Stupid niece. These two losers have looks and if they didn't, they'd be nobodys. Rihanna's name is very appropriate, because it's "Ri" for short, as in Retard. I have no

My friends, always tell me that I should write a book, the name of it would be,
HE BROKE MY RIBS...THEN CALLED ME MUFFIN Blinded by a Chris Browns status, has Rhianna blinded, she needs to picture him being an average Joe with a vicious temper. She still wants him because every girl wants him, and that is why she went back..I should know..

They are exactly right too. You've done an excellent job reporting this, and getting the word out. Everyone keeps saying, "Look at Nicole Brown Simpson". And it's true.

    Excellent work. All so true.

Too many women fall into this psychological trap, and I pity them. I worked with a woman whose boyfriend began abusing her after they had been together for a year, and I gave her holy heck for putting up with it. We lost touch for a while, and when I saw her again, she told me he had voluntarily entered anger management therapy to save their relationship. Whether I had any real influence in the matter is uncertain, but at least he valued her enough to want to treat her better. Chalk at least one up for us ladies!

Instead, she is becoming a role model for exactly the wrong thing. And considering the violence of this attack, I doubt it's the first time he has hit her. I hope her parents put paid to this nonsense; what they say to her will mean more than what Oprah, Dr. Phil or anyone else says.

With his past, his future doesn't look to good there, Evin. And for you guys who need a quick and accurate look at the cycle of domestic violence, take at look at Evin Daly's article, "Domestic Violence: The First Cut Is The Deepest." : http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/1503987/domestic_violence_the_first_cut_is.html

You don't need those rocket scientists Oprah and Phil to predict Rihanna's future!!

  • Justice Lives Not3/9/2009

Rhianna sounds like all those other "But he loves me, and I can change him" types. Pitiful.
