Her Roots
Oprah was born in rural Mississippi January 29, 1954 to a single mother. She lived with her grandmother until she was six. Then moved to Milwaukee to be with her mother. She had a life of poverty and sexual abuse. She moved with her father in Tennessee as a teenager. At the age of 19, she began anchoring on the local news. Oprah moved to Chicago and in 1984 it all began. She began her show with sensational topics. She went up against Donahue who ruled the talk show world. She quickly moved up in the ratings.
She has had her critics in the past twenty-five years. But Oprah has always been real, down-to-earth, a humble person. She has that quality of being a personable figure, similar to Barack Obama. You feel like you could sit down and talk with Oprah like a friend. She struggled with her weight like so many of us do. We related to her love of education and of reading. Oprah has a golden touch for any author or artist on her show. Many authors out there are sad to hear Oprah ends show.
Leaving a Legacy
Being the richest woman in the world has not made her vain or condescending. She has tried to educate, promote, and help millions around the world. Perhaps her legacy will be her philanthropy. She is one of the world's biggest philanthropist. Oprah has given of her time and money to help many who needed it the most. And she encouraged others to give of their time and money. As her audience, we have cried with Oprah. We have laughed with Oprah. We have cheered with Oprah. And we have donated with Oprah.
It is impossible to remember all the topics and guests she has had on over the years. I grew up with Oprah over the years. The Oprah Show is a force like no other. It is very depressing to hear that Oprah ends show. I had always hoped to be on the show or at the very least to be in the audience. Perhaps I will still have a chance before the end.
