Oprah Winfrey's Best Friend Dies - a Tribute to Sophie

Oprah's Cocker Spaniel Sophie Dies at Age 13

Meucci Cameron
Television talk show icon and multi-millionaire Oprah Winfrey felt the pain of losing something that money can't buy last month. Oprah's black cocker spaniel, Sophie, died on March 10,2008.

On Friday (April 4th, 2008) the Oprah Winfrey Show started with a tribute to Sophie. Whether you have been a loyal Oprah watcher, or just happened to see the tribute, it was a tear jerker.

You can watch the tribute to Sophie at Sophie's Tribute

Even if you do not like Oprah, or do not agree with her politics, you can not help but feel the pain of her loss. According to Oprah, "She [Sophie] was a true love of my life. In fact, she's been one of the greatest reasons for me to be a kinder, gentler person."

While Oprah still has the love of her longtime partner Steadman and her best (human) friend Gail, there is just no substitute for the unconditional love of your dog. Oprah said that she had not watched the tribute to Sophie prior to the show airing because it would just be too hard.

Anyone who has watched The Oprah Winfrey Show over the years can certainly feel the pain of the loss as well. Sophie, and her behavior issues, helped introduce us to Caesar "The Dog Whisperer" Milan. Sophie also showed a softer side of Oprah. Watching her play and talk baby talk to her cocker spaniel friend made Oprah seem more 'human' to all of us.

Any dog owner who has lost their pet after years of loyal friendship can certainly feel Oprah's pain. It doesn't matter how much money you have, this is a love that can't be bought or replaced.

The loss may have even hit a mega-star like Oprah Winfrey harder than an 'ordinary' person. For the most part we know who we can trust in our lives, Oprah does not have that luxury. Everyone wants something from her. Sophie was the only friend who never asked for anything from her famous owner (and would have treated her the same if she had no money).

As the owner of a black cocker spaniel myself (Meucci) , I knew this would be a hard story for me to follow. I cried through the tribute, and hugged Meucci closer to me. I truly don't know what I would do without him.

I have never been a big fan of Oprah Winfrey, but I can understand how devastating the loss of a dog can and will be. Rest in peace Sophie.
