Oprah's Favorite Holiday Gifts 2008: Hot Chocolate Cones

a Thrifty Gift to Make and Give

Daniella Nicole
For 2008, Oprah's Favorite Things show featured a twist: Thrifty Gifts. One such gift is called a hot chocolate cone. A hot chocolate cone is simply a clear disposable cake-decorating bag filled with everything you need to enjoy a tasty cup of hot chocolate. The ingredients are put together in a way that makes the gift resemble an ice cream cone.

Clever and practical, this gift is more likely to be used than re-gifted. Various twists on how to make this fun food gift are online, but one that has simple instructions for making seven different varieties may be found at ice-cream-freaks.com. The instructions include a printable tag with hot chocolate making instructions for the recipient.

This gift is perfect for White Elephant parties, neighbor gifts, and stocking stuffers. The hot chocolate and chocolate lovers in your life will also enjoy this creative gift.

The basic items needed to make a hot chocolate cone are clear disposable cake decorating bags, hot chocolate mix, mini marshmallows, candy or chocolate chips for flavoring, small rubber bands, and ribbon.

If you cannot find disposable cake decorating bags, you may substitute sandwich baggies or cellophane gift bags. They will need to be cut at an angle so they make a cone-shape, and the ingredients may need to be adjusted due to the size of the bags.

This is also a gift that young children can participate in making. For family fun, an assembly line could be set up, with each person tackling a different aspect of filling the layered cone, securely closing it, and decorating it.

As the recipient of a hot-chocolate cone in a prior year, I can say with some authority this is a great gift to get. It is almost too pretty to dig into - but the chocolate cravings eventually win out.

This sounds like an inexpensive but welcome gift to give to someone. Thanks! :)
