Less then a year ago, the legendary Harry Smith was removed from the CBS Early Show format and replaced by a new news team, which proved to be fruitless in the rating game. The CBS morning news show has been consistently running in 3rd place for years, next to ABC and NBC morning news shows.
In another new attempt to change that rating, CBS News chairman, Jeff Fager , announced the formation of a totally new format that doesn't copy what's already out there, which will include talk show hosts Gayle King and Charlie Rose, along with current Early Show co-host Erica Hill.
Oprah's gal pal, Gayle King will leave Winfrey's OWN network, where she has hosted "The Gayle King Show, since Jan. of 2010 to join the CBS morning news team. King also hosted the "The Gayle King Show" on XM Satellie Radio since its premiere in 2006. She has also been editor-at-large for O, the Oprah Winfrey magazine since 1999.
Charlie Rose, who has hosted his nightly interview program, "Charlie Rose", on PBS since 1991will also be part of the revamping process. Rose also was a correspondent for 60 Minutes II from 1999 to 2005. He also was an occasional correspondent on CBS's 60 Minutes, which has aired on Sunday evenings for years.
Erica Hill is the only holdover from the current CBS Early Show to land a position on the new show, at this point. She has worked for CBS since 2008, and prior to that was a CNN news correspondent on "Anderson Cooper 360" from 2005 to 2010.
The new CBS morning show will be broadcast from the CBS Broadcast Center in New York, which will also receive a facelift, its first one in its sonic history. The CBS Early Show began in 1999 with Bryant Gumbel and has gone through several hosts since its inception. Weather this new revamping process will be anymore successful than its past, is yet to be seen.
Fager says, "it is going to be hard, real news, but not all serious either". "The show will have no weatherman or cooking segments", Fager went on to say, " but will provide cutaways to local stations for headlines, weather and traffic". That will be totally different then what's on the morning news show now, which is CBS's goal, it seems.
