Optimists' Corner

Often when we ponder the outcome of a situation, we think in terms of the worst possible scenario. "Always be prepared for the worst" is a phrase many of us grew up with along with Murphy's Laws and other such negative brainwashing. We expect and fear the worst and our expectations are frequently fulfilled.

The question is--do we find the worst because it will inevitably be there? Or is it our very preparation and expectation that causes it. How can our preparing for the worst cause it to happen, you ask? Is it possible that while we are searching out all the possible negative outcomes, we forget to look for the best possible circumstances. And by failing to look for the best possible circumstances are we also failing to discover steps we might take to turn the odds in our favor.

Is a negative philosophy truly a self-fulfilling prophecy? And if it is, does it stand to reason that a positive philosophy could be just as self-fulfilling?
As humans we often find this kind of thinking very frightening. It would mean that we are, to an amazing degree, the masters of our own fate. Accepting this would mean we must give up the luxury of blaming the unfortunate happenings, missed opportunities, failed relationships, and the miserable work and home conditions on fate and place them squarely back on our own shoulders. That is a heavy load.

But consider the positive side of it. You can begin to take steps to accomplish what you want to. You are empowered with the knowledge that no one person or event can crush your hopes and dreams. It is how you respond to those people and events that determines your fate.

The next time you face what appears to be a bad situation, don't worry about the worst thing that can happen. Close your eyes and think about the best possible scenario. Then start taking steps immediately to make that vision come to life. You will find it makes an amazing difference.
