Over 45 million Americans not only get headaches but also have them recurring. Most are tension headaches in about 90% of all headaches.
Migraine pain and symptoms affect 29.5 million Americans and is the most usually type of disabling headache which sends people directly to the practitioners office. These types of headaches are most often located on one side of the head and usually associated with nausea, light and sound sensitivity and other symptoms. Numerous factors can bring about those migraines including stress, hormone changes, inadequate sleep and more.
Either way headaches are just plain miserable and can really be disabling for those who endure migraines. Over-the-counter medications can help briefly but more and more have side effects being noted. Alternative treatments without drugs have been greatly established to help aide in prevention and relief of headaches.
Monosodium Glutamate (MSG)
You may love wonton soup with it's mildly spicy flavors but it could just be giving you that headache. MSG dilates blood vessels and excites nerves in the brain. If you notice your getting headaches after that soup or eating foods with MSG, leave it out of the menu.
For the love of chocolate
We all love chocolate and those pieces of dark chocolate actually does aide in lowering blood pressure. The down side the amine compound in chocolate called phynylethylamine can cause blood vessels to constrict and dilate which can set off that migraine.
Fatty fish daily a headache reducer
A small study had discovered that taking fish oil capsules decreased the frequency and severity of migraines. You can simply consume two ounces of fatty fish daily and keep those headaches at bay.
Chiropractic
Migraines or headaches taking over your life, you may need an adjustment. There have been clinical trails that indicate spinal manipulation therapy just could give you that relief.
In one study among those who had chiropractic treatment reported a 90% decrease of attacks and 49% decrease of intensity. In another study chiropractic treatments were found just to be as effective as migraine medication without the side effects. Researchers have also found it effective for tension headaches and preventing headaches in general.
Acupuncture
Acupuncture treatments can be effective in some people. Acupuncture treatments also revealed to be just as effective as medications. It has been noted that the effectiveness of acupuncture works best at the onset of the headaches.
Reflexology
Studies have shown reflexology treatments to be effective for those suffering headaches and it even has managed to provide effectiveness that patients who endure headaches and migraines could stop taking medications to treat them.
In one study at the Royal School of Pharmacy, 220 participants were involved. Most of them had moderate to severe symptoms, 90% had taken medication at least once a month prior to study with 36% have side effects from the medications and 34% had taken medications for other non-headache problems.
Results had revealed that after three months of treatments 16% had been cured, 65% had reduced symptoms and 19% had stopped medications all together. Sources:
