Options for Getting to and from London Heathrow Airport

London is a busy, thriving metropolis and getting from the airport to the city can look like a daunting task, but it doesn't have to be. Here is information about getting to and from London Heathrow Airport. Of course, these are all approximate and you should definitely do your own research too, as things can change with a moments notice. The key to remember is that London is known for its horrible traffic so be sure to estimate enough time when arranging your transportation.

Try the tube or underground rail system that London is famous for. Visit ww.tfl.gov.uk/modalpages/2625.aspx for detailed information on using this rail system in London and the surrounding areas.

It will take approximately 40-50 minutes to get to the center of London, but a lot depends on the time you are traveling too. Peak travel times will take you longer. It's a great way to get to the Kensington area. It does take longer but it will save you money. The train can be very crowded during rush times so plan accordingly.

You can buy your ticket in the Heathrow terminal in a ticket machine. These machines take all the major credit cards.

Be sure you know where your train is going before you get on it. Some lines go to Terminal 123 and Terminal 5 and others go to Terminal 4 and Terminal 123. You would not want to miss your flight by getting on the wrong train. Remember to leave ample time to get from the airport station to your gate.

Take a look at www.journeyplanner.org . This website will allow you to see routes for using public transport or walking. It even includes times and how much it will cost you. This is a great website to bookmark

Use www.heathrowexpress.com to find out information on the Heathrow Express service offered. It takes about 15-20 minutes to Paddington from Heathrow Central and 25-30 from Terminal 5. The shuttle service also runs between Heathrow Central and Terminal 4 but does not service it directly. You can find information on prices and schedules on the website too.

The first 2 cars on the Heathrow Express are for First Class. Please note that if you want to ride in relative silence that you should look for the train cars marked with a "Q" for quiet. These cars do not allow cell phone use or any audio systems.

There is also train service that is called Heathrow Connect. See www.heathrowconnect.com for more information. This service takes about 30 minutes from city center to Paddington and makes stops along the way. If you are going to the Heathrow Airport, plan for about 45 minutes in journey time. Heathrow Connect

For shuttle bus service check into www.nationalexpress.com/coach/airport/heathrow.aspx as they host bus service between Heathrow and London City Centre. These buses also service destinations around the London area so it might make more sense to use one of these if you are staying outside of London. Be sure to check the website for fares and schedules.

Another bus option would be using Heathrow Shuttle. This service offers reliable service to London area hotels. Visit www.HeathrowShuttle.com for more information on rates and schedules.

London also has a bus service known as the Hotel Hoppa which shuttles you to local Heathrow area properties. Visit www.tfl.gov.uk/tfl/gettingaround/maps/buses for information on routes and prices.

You can also visit www.nationalexpress.com/airporttransfers/heathrow-hotel-hoppa.aspx for more information.

Taxis are always an option and they can carry many people with a fair amount of luggage. Taking a taxi might be cheaper if you are in a group rather than paying individual fares on alternate shuttle options.

Some taxi cabs take credit cards but always be sure to ask before getting into the car. If you're traveling outside of London, they do not have to give you a ride. Some will negotiate with you though. Ask one of the dispatchers that are located by the taxi area for help if you need to use a credit card or need assistance with anything else. A taxi can take anywhere from 30 minutes to over 2 hours to get into London. It just depends on traffic and traffic is always heavy in London.
