Options in Natural Childbirth Education

Which Method is Right for You?

Kathy Wiehl
Natural Childbirth is birth without drugs or medical interventions. During a natural labor and delivery, moms are encouraged to move about, eat and drink, and will employ alternative methods for pain relief such as massage or hydrotherapy. Labor is allowed to begin and progress without any medical intervention. It may seem like a simple thing, but education and preparation go a long way in preparing an expectant couple for a successful natural childbirth. Several methods can be used. Here are the most popular.

Bradley Method
The Bradley Method is learned through a series of 12 classes where couples learn pregnancy nutrition, relaxation techniques, and what happens during each stage of labor. Emphasis is placed on teaching the father of the baby to be a suitable coach during labor and on keeping the mother healthy through exercise and nutrition in order to stay low risk. Classes typically begin in the 5th month of pregnancy are are taught by a certified Bradley Instructor. To find classes in your area, go to http://www.bradleybirth.com/Main.aspx

Lamaze
The Lamaze method is similar to the Bradley Method in that it also consists of 12 classes for the expectant mother and her labor coach. During these classes both partners learn techniques for reducing pain during labor as well as Lamaze's 6 Healthy Birth Practices. Classes are taught by certified instructors which can be found by going to their website at www.lamaze.org

Hypnobirthing
Hypnobirthing is a method that utilized self hypnosis during childbirth. Pregnant women can listen to cds or take classes that teach self hypnosis. During this process, the mind is trained to experience the pain of childbirth as only a mere discomfort. Parents are trained to use this method during classes or by using audio cds.

Birthing From Within
Birthing From Within is a natural childbirth method taught in a series of classes designed by Pam England, author of the book titles Birthing From Within. Mothers are taught that birth is not a medical event and that women should utilize primitive self expression during childbirth. Much emphasis is placed on self expression both before and during labor. http://www.birthingfromwithin.com/

Birthworks
Birthworks is a program that encourages expectant parents to trust in the birth process and have faith that each woman instinctively knows how to give birth without medical intervention. Classes consist of nutrition, discussions on choosing a birth place, and educating mothers about the process of labor.
