Keeping Periodontal Disease at Bay

The American Academy of Periodontology has shown a relationship between periodontal disease and pre-term, low-birth-weight babies. They also state that pregnant women who have periodontal disease may be seven times more likely to have a premature birth. Evidence of gum disease is usually seen in the second and third trimester. Some of the signs of gum disease are swollen and bleeding gums, redness, and tenderness in the gums. When pregnant women throw-up, the acidity of the vomit can erode the enamel of the teeth, leading to an increase in tooth sensitivity and making the tooth more susceptible to decay. Pregnancy also elevates the body's response to bacteria, causing it to overreact to the bacteria in the gums, going after them aggressively.

Tips to keep your gums healthy

1. Brush often and brush well. You should brush at least twice a day for a minimum of 2 minutes per brushing. This will help keep your teeth clean and the flouride in the toothpaste will help strengthen your teeth.

2. Floss at least twice daily. More if at all possible. Flossing gets between the teeth and underneath the gums to get the plaque that brushing may have missed.

3. Make your Dentist/Dental Hygienist your oral hygiene partner. Your dentist or dental hygienist is your friend in your fight against oral disease. Let them know about your pregnancy and ask them for tips on how to maintain your oral health while you are pregnant. They will be able to access how healthy your teeth and gums are, and help you keep your teeth healthy. Visit them as often as required during your pregnancy. This will ensure a positive result in your oral health.

4. Snack on healthy, crunchy foods. As much as you are able, try to snack on healthy foods like carrots and apples. They are not only healthy for you, but will help you to keep your teeth clean by helping to remove food debris from your teeth. Avoid processed foods and sugars as much as possible. Eat foods rich in calcium, Vitamin D, and Vitamin C.

5. Rinse your mouth after a bout of morning sickness vomiting. This will keep the acid from sitting on your teeth and eroding your tooth enamel. Rinse with mouthwash like Listerine, to ensure that you kill any residual bacteria.

A combination of good oral hygiene, regular visits to your dental professional, and a balanced, healthy diet should help keep your oral health in great condition and reduce your risk of a pre-term pregancy from oral disease. Have a healthy pregnancy.
