Oral Hygiene- Why Brushing and Flossing Your Teeth Isn't Enough

Oral hygiene is the most overlooked health related issue in the world. Some are uninformed, some are undisciplined, some just don't care. Which is why so many elderly people have dentures, or have lost most of their teeth. This is completely unnecessary. Taking care of your teeth is essential now, while you are young, or at least younger. There are a lot of reasons not to wear dentures.

Most dentures are made of resin bases. These cannot be made into very thin sections, otherwise they will crack, so the individual teeth are much thicker than your real teeth, making for an unnatural fit. In many cases, users feel discomfort for the entire life of the dentures, although this is not always true. Pulling teeth and replacing them with dentures is a last ditch attempt to keep teeth in your head, not an elective option. Take the best possible care of your teeth and visit the dentist frequently, some people manage to keep their teeth all their lives this way.

The most overlooked oral hygiene product is mouthwash. It's portable and defends against bacteria. When you can't brush, use mouthwash.If you can't have alcohol, you can't use mouthwash, because it has alcohol in it. You can use tepid warm saline water, instead. Put just a pinch of salt in a glass of water. Salt kills the organisms and keeps your mouth healthy. Whatever solution you adopt, use it frequently.

No matter how much you brush and floss, you can never eliminate all the germs and bacteria in your mouth. Plaque and tartar will continue to build up, regardless of brushing, flossing and rinsing. You may reduce your risks to a certain extent, which is the goal of brushing, but you can't kill the difficult to eradicate organisms that take root in the tissue of your gums and mouth. Only a thorough professional cleaning will ensure that, and ensure you're not getting new cavities. Early detection is critical for cavities, it's much easier to repair when placing a simple filling can be enough. Your hygienist will go over the oral hygiene instructions , and likely scold you for not doing enough to care for your teeth. Whatever efforts you are taking the hygienist will very likely prescribe additional procedures or products, as they are kept up to date on hygiene products.
Don't skip your dentist visits. Going to the dentist every six months is critical. If you keep up your visits to the dentist every six months, any cavities can be detected and quickly repaired, eliminating more drastic treatments later, such as root canal. You cannot get rid of germs growing hard to reach places, and you can't prevent the tartar build up. Only your dental hygienist can perform the cleaning necessary to protect your teeth from the onset of Periodontal Disease. Periodontal disease is a serious condition that requires constant attention. The dentist might require you to come in three or four times a year. The costs associated with your dental hygiene will naturally skyrocket as well.

Regular visits to the dentist and routine daily cleaning of your teeth is absolutely critical for good oral hygiene later in life. If you have been missing appointments, or like many people, have never been to the dentist, the time to go is now, before you need extensive work. Any effort you make now will save you from agony later, and putting off a dental visit just makes it hurt more later, both in your face and your wallet.
