Montrealers who have serious acne can get an referral from their family doctor for a dermatogolist in their area, or they choose to visit a private clinic and pay for the services rendered.

Oral contraceptives is often used in combination with topical medications for the treatment of acne.

Oral contraceptives

Oral contraceptives, which include a combo of norgestimate and ethinyl estradiol (Ortho Tri-Cyclen, Previfem, others), may actually help clear up acne. On the other hand, they can also produce the following side effects:

headaches
nausea
breast tenderness
depression
high blood pressure
blood clots
heart disease

Laser Therapies and Light Therapies

These therapies reach deeper layers of the skin without harmful effects. Laser treatment is designed to lessen the oil produced in the sebaceous glands, while light therapy is designed to kill any bacteria present. Laser and light therapy will help improve the texture of the skin and prevent scaring.

Note: There is still much research needed to understand the effects of laser and light therapy. They can cause skin irritations that is similar to a sunburn. Doctors only recommend this kind of therapy when all other medications fail.

Cosmetic procedure

Different cosmetic procedures such as microdermabrasion and skin peeling have been used. However, they can cause skin irritation including redness, peeling, scaling, blistering and even
skin discoloration. They should be used in combination with other acne medications if used at all.
