Volunteer applications are currently being accepted at the Oregon Coast Aquarium. The program is for volunteers who wish to know more about marine habitats and marine life living in the ocean waters off the Pacific Northwest while contributing to the care of the Oregon Coast Aquarium. By taking the classes volunteers will learn about the Pacific Northwest coastal environment, ecosystems and interactions with visitors who come to visit the aquarium.
In order to be considered for the volunteer program there are some straightforward requirements that applicants must meet and truly commit to; such as Saturday classes and inquisitive mind. The Oregon Coast Aquarium also asks applicants for a 1 year commitment. Volunteers are asked to commit to 1 half day shift each week. For volunteers with special needs or who will be travel long distances may volunteer for a half day shift every other week. There is a one time fee of $35.00 for class materials.
The classes will be held on five consecutive Saturdays from 9am to 4pm:
September 15, 2007
September 29th
October 15th
October 27th
November 10th
Once the training has been completed at the Oregon Coast Aquarium, volunteers will then become interpreters for the Aquarium. Volunteers will share knowledgeable information learned about marine life and coastal habitats with visitors to the Oregon Coast Aquarium for a minimum of 6 months.
After the 6 month time period volunteers can and are encouraged to apply for other positions within the aquarium such as faculty maintenance, animal care, and clerical work or other positions needing to be filled within the aquarium that might be of interest to individuals.
