Oregon was pinned to their own 10-yard line on the opening kick-off, so they had to start with their backs against the end zone to get things started. Oregon then drove the ball 78 yards before Ducks quarterback Darron Thomas threw an interception to Joe Stoner. Oregon got the ball back with 9:38 left on the clock, and still hadn't scored in the game. That drought was about to end though, as Kenjon Barner rushed for a one yard touchdown on that very possession. The floodgates were opened at that point, as Darron Thomas connected with David Paulson for a 30-yard touchdown and then Barner rushed for two more touchdowns on 10 and 25 yard runs to bring an end to that first quarter. The score stood at 28-0, with Oregon scoring those four touchdowns all in less than nine minutes.
Without the first string offense in the game during the second half, the scoring attack of Oregon slowed down quite a bit, but they also showed a lot of mercy for the New Mexico defense. Darron Thomas (in one half of play) finished with 223 yards on 13-23 passing. He also had two touchdown passes and an interception to go along with it. Running back Kenjon Barner went for 147 yards on 17 carries and scored four touchdowns before he too was pulled out of the game. As impressive as the Oregon offense was on Saturday, their defense was also up to the challenge. The defense didn't give up a single point through the first three quarters, and was still holding strong with all of the starters out of the game near the end. These 2010 Oregon Ducks are for real, and if other teams didn't know yet, they will certainly recognize it now.
