Organic Baby Clothes: Softer, Eco-Friendly and Becoming Affordable
Better Variety and Prices Than 15 Years Ago
I found a whole lot of great new suppliers of organic baby clothes. FocoLoco makes clothes with bright colors and attitude. The Tadpoles line is simple and baby-ish. The clothes from Duck Duck Goose are soft and gentle pastels for baby boys and girls. My personal favorite, Under the Nile, has baby clothes that I feel are classic and comfortable. There were many others. All with different styles and colors. Organic babies don't have to dress in drab anymore.
One of my favorite things about organic cotton baby clothes is that the clothes clean easier than synthetic blends. Almost all of the clothes I bought for our oldest was still in great shape for our next baby - even after being stored for eight years! I found that natural laundry soap works better on the natural fabrics than petroleum-based laundry soap. The natural laundry soap smells a lot better, too!
More competition and a greater availability of organic cotton fabrics is slowly bringing down the price of organic baby clothes. While prices are still pretty steep, the price for organic baby clothes has come down considerably in the last 10 years. More people are choosing organic as a way of life. With higher demand has come lower prices for raw materials. This helps the smaller start-up companies be able to charge less for the same high quality organic material used for organic baby clothes.
Organic baby clothes are softer, which causes less irritation to the sensitive skin of a baby. Just be sure to wash the clothes with a natural laundry soap. Imagine spending all that money and have the chemicals and petroleum derivatives from conventional laundry soap irritate the skin of your baby anyway.
Most importantly, choosing organic clothes for your baby is good for the environment. Organic cotton is grown without pesticides or other chemicals. The run-off from these chemicals are polluting the water and soil. Many of these chemicals cannot be filtered out of the waste stream. When you choose to purchase organic baby clothes, you are not only making a choice that affects your child now, but you are helping to reduce pollution, most likely the best thing you can do for the healthy future of your little bundle of joy!
