Over the years, whenever I've thought of black beans I've thought of them as ho-hum. Perhaps that's been your thoughts too about frijoles negro ( black beans ). However, upon digging from the back corner of the pantry a one or two year old can of ShopRite Organic Black Beans and then holding them in my hand, the thought of using them as another ingredient on my Organic Southwest Pizza grew well enough to give them an optimistic try. I'm glad I did; they really added to the flavor and texture of the Organic Southwest Pizza.
Surprisingly, ShopRite Organic Black Beans taste fine right out of the can. In fact, I've really never tasted better black beans than these ( prepared ) ShopRite Organic Black Beans. The several tablespoons leftover from what I didn't use on the pizza later will make a tasty side dish when heated up with a dash of salt.
Each serving of ShopRite Organic Black Beans is loaded with dietary fiber, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration a Daily Value of 24%. The amount of Iron per serving is high too, a Daily Value of 15%. And as was noted at the start of the review, organic black beans are free of cholesterol.
ShopRite Organic Black Beans are small, no more than the size of a small, used eraser head on a pencil. Small beans makes for less of a starch-y taste compared to a larger black bean.
What was really surprising to me was how little sodium was in ShopRite Organic Black Beans, since usually canned vegetables and foods have high sodium content. A can of ShopRite Organic Black Beans has 130 milligrams or 5% DV of sodium from sea salt.
ShopRite Quality Guarantee
What I really like about ShopRite is how front and center they are with their Quality Guarantee. Had I not liked these organic black beans, I may have actually let them know, considering how approachable ShopRite is about its products.

Organic Southwest Pizza Recipe
2 tablespoons of Organic Olive Oil
1 Whole Foods Organic Original Pizza Crust
1 can of ShopRite Organic Diced Tomatoes
1 Organic Chile
1 pound of Wegmans Grass Fed and Finished Organic Ground Beef
1 pound Organic Colby Cheese
1 pack of Simply Organic Southwest Taco Seasoning
1 small Organic Yellow Onion
2 tablespoons of Organic Oregano
1 can ShopRite Organic Black Beans
2 tablespoons of Dried Organic Cilantro
Preheat oven to 400° ( degrees ). Pour two tablespoons of organic olive oil into the center of a sheet pan. Place the organic pizza crust onto it and spin the crust, so as to get olive oil all around the bottom of the pizza crust.
Spread the organic diced tomatoes and diced organic Chile evenly over the organic pizza crust. Spread one half pound of the organic Colby cheese over the tomatoes. Dice the organic yellow onion and spread it around the pizza. Spread the coarsely ground dried organic Cilantro and 3/4 of the can of organic black beans around the Southwest Pizza.
In a large mixing bowl, mix the organic ground beef with the Organic Southwest Taco Seasoning. In a skillet, brown the mixed organic ground beef until pink or medium. Remove from skillet and spread the organic ground beef around the Southwest Pizza. Spread the rest of the organic Colby cheese around the pizza and place it on the top third rack of the oven.
After 10 minutes or when the cheese starts bubbling, move the pizza to the bottom third rack to crisp the pizza crust and finish the Organic Southwest Pizza for about 3-5 more minutes. Remove the Organic Southwest Pizza from the oven and cookie sheet. Cut in fourths or eighths and serve!
