Organic California Table Grapes by Anthony's Organics Review

T. H. Pankey

We've been stocking our refrigerator throughout this summer with the smallest grapes you've ever seen, organic Champagne grapes, but we haven't been eating them as vigorously as I had wished. That changed quickly when I brought home some big, juicy organic California table grapes by Anthony's Organics. What was so good about them?

Scarlet Royal Variety

Anthony's Organics grows three varieties of organic red seedless grapes: Flame, Scarlet Royal and Sweet Scarlet. The variety that I brought home from Wegmans Food Markets was the Scarlet Royal.

Bunched between the Flame and Sweet Scarlet varieties, which ripen at the beginning and ends of summer, respectively, the Scarlet Royal variety ripens during the height of summertime.

Its skin is as its name implies, a deep scarlet red. It is quite firm, but not in a tough way. Inside its flesh is, a somewhat surprising, pale-green color. Very nicely sweet were the two pounds of grapes my daughter and I, and on one occasion a friend, vigorously ate over a few days.

"Juice Grape King of the United States"

Unbeknownst to me prior to acquiring these particular grapes for the first time, these grapes come from the same grower, Anthony A. Bianco, that New Yorker magazine once proclaimed, "Juice Grape King of the United States."

Traceable Grapes

If you were unaware, after the big E. Coli spinach contamination a few years ago, the U.S. Congress passed a law that requires all produce traceable every step of the way, from farm to your table. Anthony's Organics certainly abides by the law, using TraceMark to do so.

Common Table Grapes They are Not!

Let me emphasize what was so good about them. If you have yet to try the red seedless organic grapes Anthony Vineyards is producing, I must jokingly say: sour grapes is what you've probably been eating, compared to these grapes. You still have time to enjoy these particular grapes; they grow through the end of summer, all the way through November.

Anthony's Organics Red Seedless Table Grapes were surprisingly much sweeter than I had anticipated, and that's what was so good about them. Ripening at the height of summer surely has something to do with that. Common table grapes they are not!
