Organic Canned Peas Review: Libby's Organic Tender Sweet Peas

These Organic Peas Were a Little Overcooked but Overall Were Not Too Bad

When it comes to dinner and lunch I really try and include a lot of vegetables. I haven't really figured out a great way to incorporate too many vegetables during breakfast but I feel pretty good about how often they make an appearance in our diet. I consider myself very, very lucky because my son enjoys most of the vegetables that he has tried and is usually eager to eat them. Recently, we have been buying a few different canned vegetables. This isn't something that I would normally do, but with a tight grocery budget I am doing the best I can to get organic vegetables and fruits for me and my son. Recently, we got some organic canned peas. These peas were Libby's Organic Tender Sweet Peas.

The can was only eighty-six cents and contained just a quarter of a cup shy of two cups. Not too long after buying the can of Libby's Organic Tender Sweet Peas we tried it. I thought that the organic sweet peas were just a tiny bit overcooked, if only just a little. For once I am not going to blame myself for this because I was tasting them straight from the can. On very hot days I find it silly to heat them up over a stove. I assume that they will just lose more nutrition this way and it will use electricity that I can save. However they were still really, really good and I didn't regret getting them. Seeing how they were already cooked so well I was glad that I didn't heat them up anymore.

I was sure that even though they were well cooked that the Libby's Organic Tender Sweet Peas would still offer some nice nutrition. According to the nutrition facts in one half of a cup of these organic sweet peas there is seventy calories and only five calories from fat. There is also three hundred and seventy milligrams of sodium, twelve grams of carbohydrates, three grams of fiber, six grams of sugars and four grams of protein. The minerals and vitamins section of the nutrition facts listed vitamin A with six percent, vitamin C with twenty percent, calcium with two percent and iron with eight percent. I though that all of the nutrition facts looked pretty good, I especially like the amount of vitamin C in a serving. After looking over the nutrition facts I looked at the ingredients.

I wasn't sure what made sweet peas sweet but judging my the sugars content in the nutrition facts I had a feeling that sugar was added to the peas. In addition looking at the sodium content I had a feeling that salt was added to the Libby's Organic Tender Sweet Peas as well. I was correct, the ingredients of these organic sweet peas are organic peas, water, dehydrated can juice and sea salt. I was sure that the amount of sugar that was used was probably pretty small although I did notice that these sweet peas had a slightly higher sugars content than both other canned sweet peas and frozen ones I had. The sodium amount was about the same as the other canned sweet peas that I had on hand but much higher than the frozen sweet peas that I had on hand, I guess that you need more salt to make canned peas taste good because canned foods lose a lot of flavor.

Thinking about the loss of flavor that comes with canned goods I had to give the Libby's Organic Tender Sweet Peas credit as they were not bad. I think that I would be inclined to get them for the price that they are but canned goods aren't necessarily something that I want to start stocking up on. Although at that price I am sure that if I want to get a can of organic sweet peas that I will likely to choose to get these peas again, even though I think that I have had other organic sweet peas that were canned that I like a little bit better. That is of course until I can happily go back to getting more fresh vegetable that are organic and well priced. I would recommend for anyone to give the Libby's Organic Tender Sweet Peas a try.
