Have you wondered how to get the freshest locally grown Texas produce delivered conveniently to your door? This article will provide a guide and a source list for the information on getting both the local fresh produce delivered as well as the organic goods shipped in conveniently to your porch on beautiful Galveston Island.

Blue Star Acres, an Alvin community supported agriculture (CSA), offers a service for a year-round supply of fresh foods by subscription to families who have made a 6-month minimum commitment by purchasing shares of the acres harvest which includes vegetables, fresh herbs, fruit, beef, and eggs. A typical share is 15 pounds, a large ice chest full according to Laura Benson in an interview by Bernice Torregrossa for the Galveston Daily News Lifestyle Section (March 18, 2009). Much of this is organically grown, but it is not certified. There are several share options and the up-to-date pricing and contact information as well as delivery or drop off points can be found under Local Harvests, Inc.

Farm boxes, or vegetable boxes, can be purchased through Galveston's Lunch Box Cafe for a $20 weekly fee in advance. These average 8 kinds of produce and when the customer picks these up at the Cafe, they can add a few selections of their own to the box. Though this does not come to your door on Galveston, it is still very convenient, fresh, and grown locally. This produce comes several local farms and backyard growers. There is also fresh baked breads, desserts, and jams available for purchase at the cafe as well.

Galveston is fortunate to have a great selection of organic foods, meats, and produce available for purchase at the local stores including Randalls, Krogers, and Walmart. However, if you want to skip the whole shopping experience completely, you can have some of the finest meats, baking products, foods, and produce delivered directly to your doorstep through the Internet.

Organic meat can be ordered online and delivered fresh or frozen from Blackwing Quality Meats. These are fine restaurant quality meats which include certified organic beef, chicken, and turkey. They carry a variety of other meats including ostrich, duck, venison, and more. The meat is shipped in fresh or frozen, usually frozen for families. The meats can be purchased in small portions like 1 pound or larger portions like 5 or 10 pounds for a greater discount. The price changes depending on market conditions; however on 4/2/09 boneless/skinless breasts 2-3 lobes 10 - 16 ounces were $8.39. If you buy 5 lbs of them, they are $40.49; while 10 pounds are $70.95 on 4/2/09. For 1 pound of Kansas City Strip Steak it is $12.89, a 10 pound case of organic hamburger patties is $52, and a package of beef hot dogs is $6.99 as of 4/2/09 for an idea of beef prices.

For the finest organic baking mixes for breads, pizzas, cookies, muffins, and scones delivered to your doorstep, Wanda's Organic Mixes can be purchased at Super Bakes, Inc. These mixes are in the $4 range. Super Bakes is running a special right now for a Free Silicone Hot Pad for purchases over $25.00. Super Bakes also has a Gluten Free Products section and a Learning by Doughing section with materials for parents and children covering topics from science to geography through "doughing" (these learning products range from $4 for CD up to $10 - $12). If you have children and your find your family loves pastas, mac and cheese, breakfast cereals, grahams, cheddar snacks, and fruit snacks, then Annie's Homegrown will be a helpful selection of organic foods delivered to your door. For an example of Annie's pricing, the organic white shells and cheddar box is $2.49, and you can also buy 1 dozen at a time for a discount to $2.37 per box. Very reasonable for organic. Annie's also carries several character natural pasta including Arthur for children.

Buying locally grown and produced foods will help your local economy and ensure that you are getting very fresh products. This produce usually has more vitamins, nutrients, and enzymes since it was harvested at peak or closest to it. Buying organically eliminates many, if not all, of the chemicals, pesticides, hormones, steroids, and other non-natural potentially harmful products or practices that can go into food or meat production. When you choose free range animals, depending on the farm, some of these animals have a much better quality of life and this varies widely so it always wise to do research yourself before purchasing and consuming if you want to be a truly environmentally conscious, responsible consumer.

I'm always on the lookout for organic foods. Costco has been bringing in more and more organic products. I bought a case of Annie's mac and cheese there. I live in Washington State and there are plenty of places to buy fresh fruit and vegetables in the summer. There is a place just about two miles down the road from where I live where I can buy or even go out and pick fresh vegetables. Good article, Heather.
