Organic Food Delivery in Portland, Oregon

Kathleen McDade
In Portland, Oregon you have many choices for getting organic food. Liberal, eco-conscious Portland has a large demand for organic food, so you can find it at co-ops, farmers markets and even mainstream grocery stores. You can sign up to get an organic vegetable box from one of the many Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) programs at local farms. But if you don't have time for those options, there's always delivery. Here are three organic delivery services available in the Portland, Oregon area.

Organics To You is a locally owned and operated organic food delivery service. Their main offering is organic vegetable and fruit boxes in various sizes, from a one-person bin to bins for large families. Subscribers can also choose veggie-only or fruit-only bins. Organics To You tries to use as much local produce as possible, although in the colder season, often only 50 percent of the produce is local. Produce bin prices range from $27 to $60.

Organics To You also offers a variety of organic grocery items, including bread, coffee, and dairy products.

Delivery can be scheduled weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly.

spud! delivers both organic produce and groceries in the Portland area, but is headquartered in Canada. In Portland and Seattle, spud! was formerly known as Pioneer Organics. spud! bought out the company in 2008.

spud! also offers produce bins, but has a wider variety of other grocery items available as well. Also, customers can design their own organic vegetable boxes, rather than having to work with the company's selections for the week. That means that prices vary, too, depending on the order. Delivery is free with a minimum order of $43.

spud! emphasizes local produce in describing their service, but at the time of writing (in early April), more than half of the organic produce available was actually from California and Mexico.

New Seasons Market is a locally owned grocery chain specializing in local, natural and organic foods, with nine stores in the Portland area. New Seasons also offers delivery service for an additional $9.95. Customers can order items from the store online, and have all of their groceries for the week (not just produce) conveniently delivered.

Since New Seasons doesn't offer a standard organic vegetable box, prices vary depending on what the customer orders. Produce prices are comparable (or sometimes even better) than those at regular supermarkets.

Besides providing organic food, New Seasons is very active in the Portland community, donating to Loaves and Fishes and the School Fruit Program, among others.
