Organic Food Delivery in San Diego, Califorina

San Diego, despite being in actuality a bit of a desert, has some great local farms that deliver fresh organic produce to various areas of the city. From kale and tomatoes to winter squash and delicious summer strawberries, San Diegans can enjoy organic all year round.

Most of these local organic farms operate in what is called a CSA program, or Community Sponsored Agriculture. If you sign up with one of these farms, you receive a box of whatever is fresh at that time of the year, as often as once a week, making it easy and convenient to feed your family the healthiest and freshest produce around.

Be Wise Ranch

Be Wise Ranch is the CSA organic food delivery program that my family has used for years, and I highly recommend it. The produce is always incredibly fresh, and we have learned about vegetables we didn't even know existed. Their tomatoes are delicious, oranges seem to appear all year, and summer tomatoes are to die for. The winter offerings are also quite solid, with plenty of hearty vegetables to keep you going.

Be Wise Ranch delivers weekly to many different areas of San Diego. You don't actually get it delivered straight to your home (unless your home is the collection home for your area), but you drive just a few miles to pick up your box of produce during the afternoon or early evening of your delivery day.

The cost for the Be Wise Ranch organic produce boxes are $30/week for a large box (plenty for a family of 4-5), or $25/week for a smaller box (for families of 2-3, or with small children). You prepay for 13 weeks of deliveries at the beginning of the quarter, and you can choose either a weekly or a biweekly delivery. If you are out of town or need more time to finish eating your previous box of organic veggies, they are also very flexible with canceling a week's order if you call a couple days ahead, and they credit it to your account.

Seabreeze Organic Farm

Another option in San Diego for organic produce delivery is Seabreeze Organic Farm. It is a similar program to Be Wise Ranch, but has the added advantage that Seabreeze delivers right to your door.

Seabreeze also offers a few more options than Be Wise does as far as things that are included in the boxes. Their standard box comes with vegetables, herbs, starches (potatoes, corn, etc.), and fresh flowers. Yes, fresh flowers delivered to your door every week. You can also, for an additional fee, get a variety of organic fruit as well.

Prices are a bit higher at Seabreeze than at Be Wise. The standard box is $46.50/week, and the standard box plus fruit is $61.50/box if it comes every week, or $63/box for a delivery every other week. If you have at least 5 of the standard boxes plus fruit delivered to one location, it is discounted, at $58.50/box. Seabreeze does not allow you to cancel a week - you can either have a friend pick up your box of organic farm goodies, or you can donate your box to charity.
