The problem is that the shampoos on the market made to kill the lice and their eggs, contain chemicals which are unhealthy for long term use. Pyrethrum extract is made from the chrysanthemum flower and is considered an insecticide. Pyrethrum, Permethrin, and Lindane, all ingredients in lice killing shampoos otherwise known as RID, NIX, Kwell or Kildane. Basically they are pesticides and insecticides meant to kills bugs. While they do their job, you are exposing yourself or your child to harmful chemicals that can seep into the scalp since it must be left on for a period of time. And most parents will agree that one treatment is never enough. It must be done at least 2-3 times to effectively get rid of all lice. Now imagine how many times the average child will be exposed to head lice in his school years. And how many times will this process have to be repeated.
Long-term effects of these products are not known. They are known to be harmful chemicals according to their uses. Products used on the scalp and hair can be absorbed through the pores. Who knows what using these products repeatedly may cause to happen over time. We are just finding out about some of the cancer causing agents that were being used when we were young.
There is a safe natural head lice treatment. It is a natural substance and can be used over and over with no side effects. The treatment is very simple to use. It must be repeated 7 days after the first application. And I would suggest to do a third application 14 days from the first application to make sure than lice are completely gone to reduce the chance of re infestation. I had 3 school age kids and it was like a circle, you get one cleared and they pick it up again from one of the others. We had to do the lice treatment a few times.
The steps are very easy, the first thing you will need to do is go to your local pharmacy. You will need to get a metal Nit Comb. It's a small metal comb with very close teeth. Plastic ones may work if they are very sturdy and resist breaking. Get a fine toothed comb- preferably with a tail on the end of it for lifting sections of hair. Hairdressers call them Rat Tailed Combs.
The next thing you will need to find is a bottle of Tea Tree Shampoo. If not available at Walgreens or Rite aid, try your local health food store. or if you live near a Sunflower Market, most likely you'll find it there. You will also need a small bottle of pure Tea Tree Oil (this is a concentrate) and some white vinegar.
The treatment consists of taking the small bottle of Tea Tree Oil and adding it to the large bottle of Tea Tree Shampoo. You may need to take a little out of the shampoo bottle to make room so it doesn't spill out. Add it and shake the bottle to mix well. This shampoo will only be used for the lice treatment because it is very strong-smelling of Eucalyptus. You wet the hair first and apply a good size amount of shampoo just like you would normally. You want good sudsing. Now instead of washing it out right away, you will need to cover the head in a shower cap and let it sit for 20-30 Minutes or as long as you can stand the tingly scalp. It doesn't burn, but it does tingle like using dandruff shampoo. If you don't not have a shower cap, you may substitute wrapping some plastic food wrap just around the hair and then cover with a towel or scarf to keep the heat in. When time is up, rinse with warm water, then add a 1/2 cup of vinegar to a quart of water and rinse the hair until gone. This will help to loosen the glue that the eggs are attached to the hair with.
The last part will be the combing.Part the hair into 4 sections and secure with rubber bands or clips. Take each section one at a time and resection again .( 4 sections become 8 sections)take each section and comb with the Nit Comb. You must comb every inch of the hair. Especially very close to the scalp this is where the eggs are laid. That is why cutting the hair doesn't get rid of them. The female louse lays her eggs as close to the scalp as possible. The lice lay eggs in the hair that will hatch in 7-10 days and then those lice will be able to lay their own eggs in another 7 days. And the cycle repeats. This is why head lice is so resistant to treatment. They have actually become immune to some of the Pyrethrum treatments.
Comb the hair this way every night before your child goes to bed. And remember to wash all clothing, bedding and toys in HOT WATER. Fabric toys that cannot be washed can be put in a hot dryer for 10 Minutes. Bag up any toys that can't be cleaned and store for 2 weeks unopened. The lice must breath the same as any other bug. Suffocation is very effective at killing them.
This is a totally safe treatment and will not cause any harm to your child because it contains no chemicals. Why use harmful chemicals on our children when there is a natural cure for lice. If you would like to read more about these chemicals I will post the links to the articles in the resources.
