Organix Coconut Milk Conditioner: Why It's Better to Use as a Leave-In

The Pen
Around a month ago I bought a bottle of Organix Coconut Milk Conditioner from a CVS Pharmacy for $4.99. I was really excited to use it because I'd already tried Organix's Nourishing Self-Heating Coconut Oil and had great results, so I figured the Coconut Conditioner would be a great addition.

The Organix Conditioner comes in a pearl colored bottle with a brass colored top.

It contains water, cetyl alchohol, behentrimonium, cetearyl alchohol, cetearyl glucoside, glyceryl stearate, glycerin, cyclomethicone, dimethicone, jojoba oil, panthenol, silk amino complex, coconut milk, egg white protein, coconut oil, tocopheryl acetate (vitamin E), tetrasodium EDTA, fragrance, DMDM hydantoin, methylchloroisothiazolinone, & methylsothiazolinone.

Organix claims that the Coconut Milk Conditioner is "like a trip to the tropics in a bottle," and that "the luxuriously creamy, foaming, hydrating formula leaves your hair feeling clean, glowing, softly scented & super soft." They also claim that the conditioner "nourishes hair as gentle cleansers wash away impurities."

I really don't see a need for a conditioner to foam and cleanse away impurities if you've just used shampoo beforehand, but I kept an open mind and used the Organix Coconut Milk Conditioner on a day when my coarse, kinky hair was terribly tangled.

That was a big mistake.

This Organix Conditioner was so odd. It was thin & slippery, and on one hand it made certain small sections of my hair feel moisturized, smooth and soft, but on the other hand, it made most of my hair feel hard and even more tangled and roughed up.

Even though I added more and more of the Coconut Milk Conditioner to my strands to try and soften them, nothing really helped, it just wouldn't penetrate my hair. After rinsing, my hair was just a tangled mess, and I was so disappointed because most conditioners leave your hair in better condition, not worse off than what it was.

Immediately after using the Organix, I realized that some parts of my hair felt smooth & sleek, but most of it would be really hard to comb through with water alone. So, on a whim, I decided to pour a few large drops of it into my spray bottle filled with water.

I shook it up and sprayed it on my hair and was amazed.

It made my hair really slippery so it was a lot easier to glide a comb through my tangles. But even better was how it made my hair look and feel.

I'm African-American and I've been wearing my hair natural for almost two years, it's thick, dry & prone to frizz. When I used this Coconut Milk Conditioner as a leave-in on each section it instantly made my hair feel moisturized. The frizz disappeared, my curls became smooth, plump & defined, and my hair looked a lot shinier than it normally does.

Normally my hair dries out a few days after I shampoo it, but after spraying it lightly with this concoction everyday for a week, it stayed hydrated and frizz-free. Because it wasn't so frizzy, it wasn't as big, so it was much easier to manage when I washed it the following week.

I think the egg white proteins and silk amino complex in this conditioner help with reducing frizz and it makes my hair feel a lot stronger and silkier, but I think using too much of it would wind up making it feel too hard. So I'm only going to use this Organix Coconut Milk Conditioner one or two weeks out of every month.

In the End...

I really don't think the Organix Coconut Milk Conditioner is a good rinse-out conditioner. I tried it twice that way and it left a lot to be desired in the moisture department.

However I have found it to be amazing as a leave-in conditioner and I'm sure other kinky and curly textures would agree. It helps to make detangling easier, smoothes out curls, and adds moisture without leaving a heavy residue or weighing my curls down.

As a rinse-out conditioner I give it 3 out of 5 stars, and for a leave-in conditioner I give it 5 out of 5 stars.
